Also from my limited knowledge, the Poly engines were not numbers documented to the vehicle it was installed into during the assembly process until after 67.
Someone else can chime in if this is incorrect.

I plan to pull the heads and take a peak. $100 I feel was worth a shot!

looking at the heads i would think you would assume the heads were done. the entire engine could have been done. pull a few plugs and look for carbon on the pistons. i would just flip it over and pull the pan and check the bearings etc. you might save some time and coin.
