I have installed a whole house filtration and softening system in the house.
It consists of an iron filter (that backflushes), a 100 and 25 micron particle filters and a water softener.
Pex pipe is easy to use and I have a combination of crimp and push on fittings.

Next is to replace the water heater as it appears to be made in 1994. I tried to drain it and a dribble came out.

Looks like you've got the same setup as me. When we moved in, whenever you turned on any water source, it smelled like septic. Apparently there's a lot of sulfur in the ground water in MS. $3500 later and we can take a shower without wanting to puke!
