Ok, I’m REALLY frustrated with my car, and I’m hoping someone on here can lead me down the path of sanity, LOL…

This car has been an ongoing project for years. I paid a mechanic to Work on it and he basically slow walked the project and ripped me off, doing minimal work so now I am trying to complete it. But anyway onto the facts. The car has a new battery, new Cabling to the starter a new starter, a new carburetor, a new electronic ignition system (Perform brand), a new fuel system, the engine has been rebuilt, and yet even with all this, the engine will not start. Currently the starter solenoid clicks when the key is turned, so it is engaging, but the starter will not power up and do anything. I saw a video and it suggested you whack the starter with a hammer in case it’s stuck. I’ve done that. No success. I’ve taken a screwdriver and bypassed the starter relay switch to bypass it and I get the same results: the solenoid engages but nothing else further.

My next step that just popped to mind would be to loosen or remove the starter to see if it works without the pressure of the engine. So if it freely spins while removed, what would be the next step to attempt to manually turn the engine over using a breaker bar or some other method?

Make sure the engine is not stuck.

A bad battery cable or connection can do this.

Beyond that hard to help without knowing the car, engine, year, etc.

Ok that good to know.

If the car won't start and hasn't run is the battery run down? How many volts? Is the battery charged? Is the battery good? Can you try it in another vehicle?

Bad starter out of the box? If you jumped the solenoid and wouldnt turn, thats my guess. You can also jump it at the starter terminals.

Could be anything. But any starter needs a good battery and both cables with clean tight connections.

He needs to start with the basics and make sure they are right.

Here’s a video of it removed and trying to remote start it.

Disregard it won’t let me upload apparently!

Battery is fully charged. Shows 12.8 volts. 13.1 after I turned the ignition key off.

I guess I will go get the starter tested at AutoZone since it’s pretty much off the car. That crappy mechanic that I was using only had the bolts just about hand tight! Maybe that messed up the internals when previously trying to start it. Thanks guys, will update you when I hear back from AutoZone!!

Just because its new....I just had to replace the points in my new, remanufactured distributor because the point set came apart in my 68 300!

ok, here’s the newest update. Replaced the starter, can now cranks but refuses to start. Getting fuel, spark, battery. It’s also making this strange quit hissing sound after I crank it, like it’s got an air leak. I even restabbed the distributor thinking that it was 180 off. No luck. Running out of ideas!!!

Your choke is closed (or practically closed) when trying to start it?

Maybe try a compression test. Fully charge the battery, and keep it on the charger during the test. All the other usual stuff - take out all plugs, hold the throttle open, disconnect power to the ignition. Maybe spray a lubricant into the cylinders if the engine really hasn't run in a while.

Otherwise - are you giving the carb any shots of starter fluid while you're trying to start it?

If it cranks the fuse I left link is good.

Need to check for spark. All these new parts could mean problems.
Pull coil wire from cap and place it near metal and crank it. If it sparks and won't start pull a couple easy plugs and make sure they are not wet or fouled.

Yes make sure battery is charged, low battery is bad for starting
