Hello everyone I just bought a 63 Newport and I need help figuring out if this is a 361 or a 383

its my understanding that the 361 was the only engine available in 63 newports....... but i could be wrong

Read the block stamping. Start at distributor, go towards the cylinder head, there is a flat machined surface between the water pump housing and the head. What does it say there. Looking for Stampings on a flat machined surface.

Other than the confirmatory block stampings, with the Stromberg 2bbl, I suspect a 361 as 383s were usually 4bbl hp motors back then. Chasing the carb number application might yield some info, too.

Enjoy!

361 was the base or standard engine in Newports. 383s were options and possibly even the 413. We had two Newport wagons in 63 with 383 2bbls in them. Also I’m thinking the red color, if original, might denote the 361.

Marko. It’s possible you heard 361 was only available in a Newport as all others models had the larger engines as standard equipment. At least in U.S.

318 distributor is in the back. it's a big block.
