How bad/what is this

Why is this paint cracked? Is this bad bodywork coming back, the result of an accident, or? I don't have much/any experience in this area. Thanks

That looks like flaking Bondo to me.There also appears to be a rust stain trailing down from the crack.

The story is... It started life as a "California car", after the original owner died his nephew got it, moved it to Iowa where it has been in storage for several years. I was hoping for better. All-in-all more body work than I want to deal with.

If that is the only bad spot you got it better than many. Can we see the rest of the car?

Is that a front fender? That would be an easy fix if it is.

I have not seen it in person, only pics. I asked for a picture of the trunk, under the vinyl mat, this was all he had...looks like it has been wet. strike two. 3 1/2 hr. drive one way, I already have a car on which to practice rust repair, etc. I think I'm gonna pass.
