I have a 1966 Sport Fury 383 4-speed in console. My reverse lockout cable came loose from my reverse lockout. I’ve successfully threaded back in through lockout trigger but kept having to undo it. First had too much slop, 2nd time too tight and now cable is frayed and I can’t get it back through. I have wanted to replace the inland shifter with a Hurst anyways. This is my first 4 speed car. Is there any reason I can’t replace the Inland shifter and assembly with a regular Hurst Comp-Plus and hurst shifter and do away with the revers lockout completely?? The only info I can find is replacing with Hurst competition plus to mate up to original inland shifter. This may be a dumb question but I just need advice before I buy anything. Thank you in advance!!

Take the lockout cable out and then it will be disabled.

I wouldn’t swap it, the inland handle looks so cool.

Hurst is a much better shifter. The shifting is so much more precise than Inland ever was. There was a reason the Inland was called the "guess a gear" shifter.

Guess I’m really lucky. I have two cars with inland shifters and they work great. I can speed shift them. That means leave the gas on the floor and press the clutch and shift.

Want to save your Inland stick for that original look? Brewer has a Hurst conversion where you reuse your Inland stick. Brewer's Performance - Mopar A833 4-Speed Transmission and Component Specialists

Or you could take apart the inland shifter. Clean and lubricate it. Now install and adjust it Per factory service manual.

Back in the day when these cars were new, one of the first things would be to replace the sloppy Inland with a Hurst. When we switched to the Hurst in my cousins 1967 Barracuda 383 it made a huge difference at the track. Chrysler went with the Hurst shifters for a reason. Unless you are looking to be 100% factory stock, I would make the switch.

Thanks! I like the look of the original but have always loved hurst shifters. Just strong and smooth and just as nostalgic in my opinion. That’s what I’m going to do.

It's your car and your money, so you should do whatever floats your boat. But from my own experience with that Inland unit in a '67 R/T I had from 1967 until 1972, with the Hurst unit in the '65 Sport Fury 426-S I had from 1964 until 1967, and with the '65 Sport Fury 426-S that's been in my garage since 2016, I'd go with the Hurst just because it's fun to shift. That Inland thing is like shifting a piece of spaghetti. The 4-speed on my '65 Fuelie Vette has a reverse lockout, but that Muncie box has a very short throw which makes all the difference in the world. And, for what it's worth, that Hurst label has more panache and appeal than "Inland Steel."

Thanks for your input! I found the shifter I need for my console online and got it ordered. I have the same thoughts on it as you. Just nice to hear it backed up with someone with experience on both. Can’t wait to drive it with a nice smooth hurst and with a Hurst it will be just as nostalgic as the original shifter too.

Btw, would love to see a pic of your 65!

Your wish is my command. The color pics (exterior and interior) are of the car I have now; the black and white is of the first one, taken in the spring of 1966. The cars are almost identical (i.e., Medium Red Metallic with matching interior 2-dr HTs, 426-S engines, 4-speeds, no PS or AC) except the present one doesn't have PB but does the vinyl roof, bumper guards, and that dumb console mounted tach.

The correct shifter handle for a C-body with console is HTF.
I've seen comments on here that there's 1 vendor that has some, but don't recall who/where.
If you find your new setup needs that handle, we can revisit?

BTW, with a Hurst - 'if your arm doesn't hurt, you're not shifting it right'.
