Lifting a BB?

Hey guys, I've done this before, but want to hear from you guys were you lift a big block to get the motor mounts out.
 
I've done it a bunch of ways but usually do the old 2x6 under the oil pan with a jack if I don't have an engine hoist which I do now. Make sure the board is wider than the base of the pan or it will cave it in a bit. If I have a hoist I use it to lift the front of the engine. Swing by the house and we can knock it out and have a beer! LMAO. One of these days I'm going to convince you to make the drive!

Man,.I'd like to drive that far, but the gas would friggin kill me at like 9 mpg or less. I have a lot of work coming up this weekend on the car. New booster going in,.new electric vac pump,. new vac pressure switch, mounts and starter. Going to go with a 92 Dakota 5.2 starter.

These friggin brakes are getting on my nerves to say the least.!! SSBC has been good about it, but we'll see after replacing the parts they sent me.
 
yeah I forgot about that. I have to get the pigtail for the starter I am going to run and get down there and change that as well. I have been focusing on getting ready for this trip so I haven't even thought about working on the car the last week or so. Hopefully when I get back in a couple of weeks and get this camaro done for a guy I can get back to work on the car and get it running and driving. Wilwood is going to put a brake kit together for me and make me a pretty good deal on it so hopefully I will be able to do that and wheels before the end of the year. I am Looking forward to meeting up with GMC65 and swap some parts with him and get mine looking a little more complete.
 
I usually do it by the oil pan as well. I'll keep it that way, but there's always that chance to cave it in and that would not be a good day!!.
 
I use a fixture that straddles the fender lips so I am clear floor under it. Makes it nice but at $500, you need to make quite abit of money for it to pay for itself. Its original intent is for front drive cars to stabilize the engine when pulling transmissions.
 
I've got two ways-

I made a bracket and cut down a 2x4, so it bots to my floor jack, in place of the factory swivel pad.
The 2x4 is cut down to clear the balance, and rest on the pan rail.

I also made a rig from a 2x6 trapped between the hood spring and fender, laying across 4 fender bolts...
a 56" length of 14" "C" channel spanning the bay, and a 2x4 with a scissors jack screwed to it on the other side.
That one does one at a time, but it's super easy.
 
like commando1 I always use the balancer to place the jack under. when the engine is up I put either some wood spacers or sockets between the mounts and frame just in case the jack lets the engine down

I don't get why anyone would want to use the balancer (CRANK) to lift an engine. To me that is the last place I would want to lift from. A 2x6 under the pan should be more than good enough and no worry of damage to the balancer/seals/...
