I know the switch in question (have a few). Is your wiring missing? Or is it fried?
 
That's a lot of heat / resistance! Switch with bad contacts will do that, along with a motor that is really dragging. If you bypass the switch does the top function smoothly?
 
The Lord I hear "drove a Fury"... Models include; Fury I, Fury II, Fury III, Sport Fury.
