looking for recommendations for a competent place to send my carter bbd 2 barrel for a rebuild, and/or a recommendation for an affordable Carter replacement. It’s on a 68 Newport, 383, single exhaust.

What performance issue leads you' to believe it needs a rebuild? Just curious.

The '70-'72 Holley 2210 (2245 for '73+ with EGR, which you don't have) is a bolt-on replacement. Linkage and everything. I replaced the Stromberg WWC3 2bbl on my '66 Newport 383 with a 2210 back in '73 or so. It worked great. MPG improved a bit, too.

I'd recommend checking for an older, local, private owned garage with an older owner or mechanic who still knows how to work on carbs.

Unfortunately I can only tell you where NOT to send it for rebuild. DO NOT use KarbKing in Pittsburgh. They're a bunch of idiots who lost a carb I sent to, and paid for a rebuild. They wanted me to BUY another core that they would rebuild for free. Even though I'm local, they won't let anyone come to there shop. I had to have my attorney get involved, and yes, I know the attorney cost more than the core, it's the principle for me. I wasn't going to let the dip shits get away with it.

I’m just starting fresh with all the bolt on mechanicals... I’ve only had this car since June, I do not know it’s history other than it sat for many years, outside, and needs a lot of love. It’s no trophy, I just want a drivable car.... eventually...lol.

I’ll offer my services if you want to travel across the border

Hey Mr Castle,

That’s pretty much your only option. A trusted friend or a guy on this site vs do it yourself. I’ve quit doing carbs for buddies only because I don’t have a warranty department. An old carb, ours are what 30 40 50 plus years old, will always need a bit of tinkering. Most of the guys I help out don’t know don’t touch or don’t know and tinker. Then I get the call hey I’m stuck hey it Boggs hey it’s gassy etc etc. I like helping but I have no say so once it leaves my garage. With all that being said what I tell my pals now is think of the carb as a set of tires. Buy a new carb every couple years and like new tires 99% chance it’ll be trouble free fun. Just my two cents earned the hard way over 30 plus years.

And I truly wish you good luck trying to find an honest Carb Shop anywhere that’s not in the hobby, ( and sometimes even if they are....).

PS avoid the show pony refinishers that are only concerned with OEM correct for the trailer queen crowd. Looks good don’t equal runs good.

In looking around on another deal today, I found National Carburetor in Florida. In many cases, they'll do the rebuild of your 1.56" throttle bore BBD for $229.00 OR sell you a rebuilt one for the same money. They also have the Holley 2bbls I mentioned. Website claims they've been around since the 1950s. I mention this just for reference puirposes!

There's also The Carb Shop in Eldon, MO. Jon's an old Carter guy from way back. BUT there should be somebody closer to you, I suspect, that can do good work. To me, main things to look for would be to ensure the tubes hanging out of the bottom of the venturi cluster are open and of the correct internal size. Plus that the power piston works and such.

The whole deal of "replacement" carbs can be multifaceted! I like "OEM replacement" rather than otherwise, when possible. On the others, you can check the OEM jet/rod sizes for reference to what the replacements have in them, to see how close they are.

Granted, any "used" carb might need some fiddling to get it tuned for best performance. Even the new ones can take the same amount of effort/time, by observation. Just that you know the throttle shaft/carb body interface is new, as are the other parts. But even NEW carbs can have problems.

For many Mopar enthusiasts, an Edelbrock Performer intake and a new AFB or AVS (with appropriate linkage changes) can be "just the ticket".

Enjoy!

My personal experience with rebuilders of original Holley 2210 carburetors has led me to trust the vendor "Autoline" that is used by Rock Auto. Holley 2210s are notorious for warped air horns causing a wealth of driveability problems and can not be fixed unless the air horn is flattened and planed (and then don't tighten the wing nut much as that causes the warpage in those models). The only source that actually did this successfully was Autoline. I called them to inquire about what they do to address the problem with the 2210s and they were immediately aware of the problem and told me that is what they do to rebuild them. I ordered one from them because I could not get mine to work properly, and they told me about their process. I ordered one and it actually worked! I had tried other rebuilders and every one of them was junk, so hereinafter, I make sure I use Autoline. A quality rebuilder and I am confident they will do you right on your Carter 2 bbl.

And they are available from Rock Auto for $115.79 plus your core or $95 for your core. I would use them. They have been a supplier to Rock Auto for a long time, so you know they must be good to survive that long with such a large vendor.

I agree Steve, picked up an Autoline rebuild for my 66 from RockAuto worked great. Canadian company located in Winnipeg. I remember buying carbs from them through Canadian Tire 30 years ago.
