its because of the shroud

I would still pull the fan and pulley so there's less weight when lining up, and bolting down the new pump.

I typicaly unbolt the shroud and hang it on the fan, then remove the fan and shroud.
I once reached in and unbolted the fan with the shroud in place, too much work.

I do it one step at a time.
I peel layers off until I get to the what I want.
That way I have a clear cut path to put in the new one slick as grease.
Reverse, one layer at a time.
