The console top in my 67 SF had the metal top but it wasn't brushed was more of a polished alum look with clear over it.

and it was really cool but if it's messed up I don't know how you would fix one. How would you restore one .. remove the clear, polish, and reapply clear ?

Aluminum machines the same as wood and with all the same tools. Fixing the originals, if they are aluminum, would be easy as would making replacements.
