June 27, 1940 – A speech by Missouri Senator Harry S Truman highlighted the dedication ceremonies for the Miami Bridge over the Missouri River. Approximately 2,500 people attended the opening ceremony, and motorists were allowed to cross the new bridge free of charge for the day. The Miami Bridge was officially named the Forrest McDaniel Memorial Bridge after the local businessman who worked to get it built. The state took over the bridge and the tolls were lifted in 1962. The span was rehabilitated in 1983 and was closed to traffic on October 5, 2009. It was demolished shortly afterwards.
