Here are a couple pics of the best valve cover gasket I have ever used. It is sad it was never developed for big block and that it is now discontinued.
If you find a source with old stock, grab it. They are sold as one each.

One method that helps is to use a short straight edge across the bolt holes on the underside of the valve cover
You will than be able to see the gap between the holes and the bottom surface of the valve cover and correct the over torqued and distorted mounting hole surface as mentioned

I figured that my time working the stock valve cover could be better used on something else. But I agree with regarding the way that you described to fix it.

I have received the new valve covers and gaskets. They look very nice.
I’ll make time to install the passenger side late this week, maybe after the 26th.
