I just received new OEM pcv valve, can anyone tell me what the nut is for? There isnt one one the old one, I dont see the purpose.

On those valves which were used with the metal housings, which slid into the tube on the top of the valve cover. The valve was inserted through the bottom, compressing the spring inside of the cap, then the nut was used to hold everything together on the top of the cap. In later years, it just slid into a rubber grommet on the valve cover. The grommet was designed with the small hole in it.
 
That makes sense, I have seen that style on some other engines. A new grommet came with this one which is whats on mine. Had a heck of a time getting out the old one, hard as a rock! Always thankful for y'alls help.
