Hi Guys,
I'm trying to install a shroud. Looks like I need to remove the fan to install.
I removed 4 bolts from the fan thinking that it would release it..no luck.
Any suggestions on how to remove the fan or install the shroud.
It's a 400 1973 Newport

Appreciate the advice

Grab it and wiggle. It will come off.

A suggestion is to put a piece of cardboard between the fan and the radiator so when it pops off, you don't bang up the radiator fins.

So again with looking at my pics..only the small brown piece with the 4 bolts is all I need to do to remove the fan. Not the blue crank with the belts..sorry trying to explain in my language lol

What he's trying to tell you is if you loosen the fan belt, the pulley will come loose and the fan may come off easier.

Loosen these bolts on the alternator, marked in yellow. Just a turn or two, they don't have to come out. That will take the tension off the belt.

that alternator belt isn't making it tight on the water pump shaft. It needs some persuasion. Pry on it with a prybar. As said above Be careful you don't dent the radiator when it comes loose.

Tap it with a hammer, if you can get one in there. Or, use a large screwdriver as a wedge, tap down on it. There's a "nipple" the fan sits on; makes it snug.

Ok great i guess that's the way to install the shroud..remove the fan ?...I thought maybe i might have to remove the rad.

The plastic, one-piece shrouds you need to remove the fan. The shroud on my '62 New Yorker was a two-piece, metal thing. You could take it off and put it on without removing the fan.

Removing the fan is going to be necessary even if you took the radiator out.

Yes, the easiest and quickest way is to just remove the fan. There was a suggestion to loosen the belt too, but it might not be necessary.

This is what the pump looks like with the fan off. There's a hole in the fan drive that is sticking to the nub on the end of the pump.

I recommend a hard rubber, plastic or brass mallet for this sort of persuasion. Don't want to mess anything up.

Better for you to leave the radiator on so that you can see just exactly how your shroud will fit into things while in the front of your engine. Once you get the fan off, clean up the surface of the water pump hub and the fan too, so that subsequent removals/installations go easily.

A painters 5 in one tool works good on those. Just work your way around a tiny bit at a time after the belt is removed.
Don't take a hammer straight to any of it. Just tap the tool.
