Hey guys,

Was wondering if any of you have reused a torque convertor in a rebuilt trans?

Here's the dilemma... The 727 in the Cordoba works fine, and goes through all gears properly. Previous owner stated it was rebuilt around ten years ago, and according to written down mileage only has around 7,000 miles since.

Currently though, the trans seems to be leaking from everywhere possible. After sitting in the driveway the past week or so, there is a HUGE pond of tranny fluid growing underneath.

I have a rebuilt 727 kicking around the garage for the last year or so waiting for the blumo. Was thinking of swapping trannys. Money is really tight at the moment... (ain't it always!). And was wondering if I'd be alright to reuse the torque convertor in the car currently (if it checks out good, with not cracks)? I know not a great idea.. But you guys see any problems with this?? The trans hasn't blown up, or slipping, just leaking like a waterfall.

I'd reuse the convertor in a heartbeat.

But... The leakage is most likely the seals for the throttle pressure lever at the valve body, the valve body to case seal, the dip stick tube and the pan gasket. Possibly the front seal too, but that doesn't leak sitting there.

So... You could fix those seals with the trans in the car. The front seal would require pulling the trans, but it may not be leaking.

Thanks John!

I'm fairly confident the front seal if leaking. There is fluid all over the bottom of the bell housing. Really isn't saying much though, as there is fluid all over the place underneath. I haven't looked too hard at it yet, but figured I've already got a rebuilt trans to throw in, and can rebuild this one at a later date...

As long as trans is bad, burnt, slipping, and not a lock up I would use it. The reasoning behind not using one over is the trash from a dying trans spins out against inside of converter and then contaminates the new trans. That converter has a weight on the 400 but I am guessing that's why you want to reuse.

Only 1978 and up cars had lockup torque converter's.....unless someone put a lockup converter and txsm in a pre 1978 car.

Note: Only 1978 Newport's and NYB's have BB lockup txsm's and converter's.

Zac, should be no problem reusing a converter.

I know money is tight... FYI, a new converter is about $100 from AAP. You might be able to get 20%-30% off ordering it through AAP on-line.

Sometimes I wonder if they they just simply shake it and if it doesn't rattle, just hit it with some krylon.
I can't believe all the hundred dollar units are opened up.

Mexico.

I pulled dozens of rail boxes to auto parts whse from Mexico with starters alt steering boxes, steering racks, CV Axel shafts.

Bought a new motor mount for the Newport yesterday. RA, AZ, and Advance all sell the same one.
From Korea. I was expecting India...

Monaco 75,

I had the same issue with my 727 leaking like a sieve when I first picked her up. Driving it helped slow the leaks a little (car had been sitting), but then I put in some AT-205 Re-Seal and it really helped a lot! Learned about this stuff from my father in law who's a farmer. Never been a fan of additives for leaks, but after trying this stuff, and seeing it work, I recommend it.
If the reason for puling the tranny is for leaks alone, trying this might be an easier way out for now.

Opened, cleaned if fails a visual insp. scraped if pass rewelded and boxed.

I hope it's not an anchor motor mount. My truck was eating them every 6 months they would separate from the top, and bottom.

What do you mean by "anchor" mount.
I search as many sources as possible and they all listed the same one. Evidently there is some dirt floor shack in Korea still cranking them out by the 3rd generation.
