I'm about to drywall my second floor addition, and before I make my eves totally inaccessible from the inside, I was thinking of adding a couple security cameras. If I went wireless, I could do it pretty much anytime (not needing to run wires and all). However, if I use wires they'll probably crap out in a year or two, given the quality of most Chinese electronics + harsh winter temps and ice. (I have some wired cameras now on the 1st floor)

Anyone here have wireless cameras? I'm not so worried about signal strength as I am battery life.

I don't have wireless cameras, but what I do have is a wireless weather station. The PA winter kills it almost every year. Even last year that wasn't that bad. I would not do wireless any type of outside camera.

I have a wireless system at my house. All I can say is it was very easy to hook up but the distance from the camera's to the base station is half of what they claim. I like it a lot but it does have its down side. I didn't want to be stringing wires all over the house so like anything else, there are trade offs. Every camera i have is plugged into a wall outlet so I didn't have to worry about n batteries going dead.

yes. buy cameras. yes. prewire.

there are basically 2 ways to do it. wireless would be a 3rd way but it dont count dont go wifi. so the 2 ways are BNC/coax and ethernet/IP/PoE.

ethernet /PoE / IP however you want to call it is a bit more expensive up front.

coax usually requires dedicated power to the cameras, so if getting power to the endpoint is an issue, PoE may be your choice. they have siamese wire coax + power. but PoE delivers camera power via the same cat5 wire.

both systems should write to HDD, no more VHS tapes. get at least 2TB HDD or more.

i just bought a reolink system a couple of weeks ago, im enjoying it so far. uninstalled a samsung system and gave it to my kid for their house.
