side body trim installation?

My 1970 Fury came with most of the side trim removed. There are plastic clips on the car. Because there is a cutout in the side of the trim, it seems like you are supposed to slid the trim onto the clips and then secure it with the stud that goes through the sheet metal, but I don't see how you can do what without bending the trim and or scratching the side with the stud. Are you just supposed to snap the trim over the plastic clips?

Don't "slide" the trim. Top over the clip first, then snap the lower portion in place. Tighten end fasteners last.
Once the trim is snapped onto the clips, minor end to end adjustment with a small block of wood before tightening the end clips, can be obtained.

Do the plastic clips wear out with repeat removal/installation? I'm wondering if I should put the trim back on now or wait until after I either buff or repaint. That might be a while, but I don't want to ruin the clips.

Not so much wear out, but they're plastic and also rather old and quite likely somewhat brittle. I'd probably wait unless you source and have in hand replacements.
