My steering seems pretty sloppy. I'm always correcting it left or right when I'm going straight down the road. Is this normal? It makes it hard to just cruise and enjoy the scenery when I constantly have to make tiny adjustments.

It has a new steering gearbox so is the problem in the linkage? Tie rods or whatever it has i guess??

Anyone with similar problems, ideas?

Thanks!

Is this normal?
Yes. Normal for that era. If you weren't around then one doesn't realize cars were really that bad back then.
Plus you've got 40 years of slop now. I wouldn't sink a nickel into a new box until the whole front end has been gone through.
Also, in the FSM, it shows an adjustment screw on the box that you can fiddle with. It may work a little but don't expect that to fix everything.

Is it vague, or is there a big dead spot in the center where the wheel moves side to side without moving the wheels?

if there is a dead spot with slop, you're looking at worn parts. If it is wandering, you could be looking at alignment issues. There is a thread here somewhere that links to changes in geometry you can do to make up for the differences between bias and radial tires.
