Ya, recharging your own a/c is not that common over here, that makes it easier to find something like I found in germany. But I'm sure it's possible to find cheap R12 in old garages all over the US, too!

I see it on craigslist from time to time, usually by the case but sometimes a large tank or individual cans as well.

i bought my four cans from a ad on craigslist.picked up car tonite after work from The Garage (thats the name of the shop)they replaced the drier,expansion valve and o-rings evacuated the system and charged system. putting out a cool 45 degree's from the vents.will be great on the trip to carlisle plan to hit the road by 7:30. cant wait

I did check my local CL and it looks like there's some price fixing conspiracy down here at $30 - 35 a can.
Found some "partially" used tanks going from 150 up to 400 bucks.
