Speedo cable

soon I need to pick up my ‘67 imperial but the speedo meter is making a loud noise from under the dash. It my First drive in this car so I need to listen to other weird noises as I drive her home. So I got two options:
1 disconnect cable under the dash.
2 disconnect cable at the trans. (Leaks??)

What is the best way to go?

Disconnect from underneath, it is easier to get at. It should not leak enough to be of any concern unless you are planning to go several hundred miles.
