I bought my first mopar last month. I really love the car. Its a 65 fury. It has the slant six engine and a903 transmission. It was making quite a bit of noise so I decided to pull it out. It was making noise and binding turning it by hand. After disassembly, I discovered a lot of metal debris that used to be needle bearings where the main shaft and front shaft meet. It really scarred up the shafts. After much research, I have concluded that it would be best to convert it to an a230. I really want to retain the column shifter. Is there a particular doner car I should look for to make the swap easier? Will the bell housing, clutch, and speedometer work from the a903? Any mods to the cross member? I read somewhere that someone did the swap and the original drive shaft worked but the yoke had to be trimmed 2 inches (the part without splines). Any suggestions or other options would be a great help. I knew absolutely nothing about these cars until last month.

And the manual 3 speeds (bolt action) are the least common of all, very few know anything about them. Good luck.

The only one I ever had I yanked for a 4 speed. Sold the trans years ago to a fella doing a cop car resto. The issue I was hinting at is most folks won't leave a /6 alone, so they can't leave the lightweight transmissions in either with the end result not many are going to have a clue about interchange like you're asking. Sorry I can't be of more help.

This is can be done, but it is not as simple as one might think. First off, the later shift levers are shorter and will not work with your current shift linkage. You will need to lengthen them about 1" to get the linkage parts to mate up properly. You will also need to find a '66 speedo cable to complete the conversion. Your current speedo cable will be too short to work with the updated transmission. You could use the 65 drive line, but it will need to have the front yoke assembly replaced and the drive line will probably need to be shortened to accommodate the longer transmission. Your current speedo will work as long as the replacement transmission came out of a car with the same rear end ratio, if not, you will need to change the speedo drive gear to mate with your rear end. The transmission should bolt up to your current bell housing.

that's ok. Thanks for the reply. My son was a given a good running 360 with a 727 transmission and he is begging me to drop it in there. I read somewhere that in a c body, it was a very difficult swap if it originally had the /6. Part of me wants to stay original but the other wants that v8 in there.

Out of any car I think. These are very A904 automatic like and they are all short unlike a A833 four speed with long and short tailshaft housing. You may have to change the slip yoke altogether to a newer style, definitely if you still have ball and trunnion or greased slip yoke.

Trying to put a v-8 into a slant six car is very tough to do as the cross members and mount points are completely different. I did a v-8 conversion to a C-body car years ago and that involved putting a new stub frame under the car. Decided after that one to never do another.

There you go, the voice of experience............... and I've never tried it.

V8 in anything with a /6 originally is a PITA except maybe a BB or Hemi on elephant ears.
