When opportunity knocks, what do you do?

Before you respond check their email. If it is not from that company to to their website first. Check careers and see. Call THEM and see if they have an opening.
Indeed is a whores paradise. Recruiters find openings and the scour for matching resumes. If they present your resume unsolicited it will be ignored because of the fee the recruiter charges. The position is probably real, but go direct

I made sure it was legit. I'm corresponding with the general manager up there currently.

pretty good turn over there it seems.....sometimes a slow nickles better than a fast dime

Like I said, I'm going to go up and look around, talk to the guys, see what they expect and want and go from there.

I always keep my options open, and have two local job offers as well as a few friends who have told me I have a job with them if I need it.

My grandpa told me when I was about 5 or so "never burn a bridge son, you may need to cross it again"

I didn't understand it then, but as I've aged I've began to understand it more by the day.

In talking with my previous apprentice from my last position....apparently everyone hates my replacement and he is useless...

To figure, I told my apprentice when I saw the guys toolbox that he was all show and no go.

Nick

Then you did the math and figured out you'd be upside down unless you ran 1,000 mi. a week. Then you figured out how many hours you needed to get in 1,000 mi. per week. And then you found out it's impossible to drive a 1,000 mi. per week.
I don't understand how companies are allowed to lie like that.

My back would have never made it until the end of that payment book lifting furniture...

On a serious note, that is wise advice. The benefits and pension that you have is an important consideration. You just need to figure out what your dream is and what you want. The prize is doing what you want.

Lot's of great advice for you Nick, I am confident you will make the best decision for you. Best of luck and what ever you decide don't second guess your decision.

One point to consider wrt CBC, broadcast TV is a dying industry and will be quickly eaten up by internet services like Netflix and other streaming services. My brother-in-law has been with CTV for over 30 years and he says the writing is on the wall and hopes he gets to retire before the hammer drops.

My brother-in-law was working for CBC when the adopted this logo

He said they called it the exploding *******.

Stupid consultants billing them $750.00/hr to come up with that stuff.
And Nick doesn't know if he'll be there Monday.
Makes you bitter

Basically currently I'm on contract and said contract runs out next friday, They have a choice to renew it or say goodbye at which point I don't have a job.

I would like to stay where I am for a few reasons if I could;
1.) My dad put 35 years in here at CBC
2.) Its interesting, but simple work
3.) I have benefits for myself and spouse
4.) Federal government pension
5.) I work for one of my dad's best friends and the man who gave me Convertible somewhere to live for 3 years.

But, then there's a new opportunity and it would be a nice thing on a resume, but it creates new things to think about;

1.) Will this be long-term
2.) Will I enjoy this and it not effect my view of my hobby.
3.) Will be okay with moving or dealing with a 1-2 hour commute dependent or road and weather conditions.
4.) What are their expectations and how much pressure am I going to have on me to perform as they want.

I'm willing to admit I don't know everything, I'm still young and still have a long way to go. I have strengths and weaknesses.

It's a hell of a lot to process and weigh,

That being said I've set up an interview with them next week and will go from there.

Nick
Nick, my impression has always been that you're a smart guy with outstanding decision making ability... I am sure that you will be fine whatever way you go.

As I see it now, it would be tough to pass on the fleet offer if it comes through... but you aren't 50 and physically broken.

I do see the "following the dream" aspect of the restoration shop job... I suppose all I can say that could make any difference is to advise you to make certain you can survive on the wages from the new job. If the hours are what I suspicion, you might do better to rent a room cheap than to move the whole famn damily close to them. You'll know in a few months if the job is worth the move.

Will is knowledgeable as to how this sort of resume is built and capitalized on, I F'ed around too much when I was young enough to make that jump with low risk, and too chicken to do it since.

Good luck buddy, if you're like me, you will probably wonder about the road not taken and where you would have gone if...

I’d be concerned about collecting a Pension from a Corporation that exists at the whim of whomever is in power politically but it would be attractive. Aside from that as I am sure Nick is aware there is always a job for an experienced Tech given the shortage of Tradesmen in this country...and the chance to work on some of the most interesting cars in the world even for a little while would be hard to resist for me. No getting soaked under a hoist while the snow melts off the car while you are making .4 on the 3 hour Diag job ...just sayin

Amen...
By the time Nick is ready to collect, every pension in the country will have been obliterated by then. All those years invested down the toilet replaced by a 401k at 10% of the pension's future value.
Unless you're a millionaire, you can't survive after retirement on what your 401k gives you back.
401k's were rammed through by big business as their initial attack on their long term plan on getting rid of pensiins altogether.

Now that I'm older and wiser, I can now understand the pure mathematics of pensions and they were Ponzi schemes blindly accepted as the ideal model for providing comfort for the Golden years.

Man, I'm ecstatic I cashed out at its peak.

Pensions are a thing of the past and don't be surprised if the government one goes away before you get to retire.

I reread this thread before saying anything... They haven't committed to renewing your contract and time is short. I hate to say it, but that says to me that they aren't going to. It may not have anything to do with you... It may just be that next year's budget is tight.

Pensions were really designed for shorter lifespans. Same with social security. The real trouble with the 401k is you really can't accumulate enough to realistically cover a retirement that can last 20-30 years plus inflation. The rule used to be save 10%. Then recently it went to 15%. Still short. Way short.

What i don’t understand is half the population my age have less saved than my Christmas bonus in a good year.
I tell the youngsters to start with 10% when they first start working. They’ll never miss that 10% before taxes. Throw at least half of any bonus in a Roth Ira.

sounds like a good opportunity, but be careful.
sometimes doing something you love for 40+ hours a week will take the enjoyment out of your hobby.
i've watched the show a few times and it seems as though grainger isn't the sole owner. it seems as though his girlfiend/wife and his money bags buddy are deeply invested. could be good for stability of the business, but bad if one of them flakes out.

Sounds like a risky or temporary job. What happens if ratings drop and show gets cancelled?
