Carlisle 2021

@MAGNUM77 -- just join the Midwest Caravan to Carlisle, it'll me more fun to have other members around if you have issues. Here is what I have been thinking about for routes:

Alternative 1: Rockford -> Chicago -> South Bend -> Toledo -> Streetboro (stopover/hotel) -> Carlisle. Folks from MI and other "northern" places can join at various points along the way

Alternative 2: Rockford -> Champaign -> Indianapolis -> Columbus -> Streetboro (stopover/hotel) -> Carlisle. Folks from MO, KY, and IN and other "southern" parts can join along the way.

In both cases, suggest overnighting in Streetboro -- easy to get off I-80, and there is a range of well-rated options for lodging at different price points (AFAIK, Walmart is not one of them ):

I have driven through but never stopped in Streetboro, so if there is a better suggestion I am all ears. Regardless, on Thursday, the idea would be to take I-80 before coming down on PA-15 to Mechanicsburg (where many of us will be staying) and getting to Carlisle.

I 80 to I 99 south to 26 to 144 to 322 to 22 to 15 is a little shorter than all the way to 15.
I run across 22 from home and follow 34 straight to gate 3.

You can have that fun, but I'm going around that log jam.
Wanna go from Rockford to Indy via Champaign and pick up @david hill in Indianapolis? Sure works for me!

I tried to pick a route with fewer elevation changes. How do the two compare?

I will join u down at Streetsboro. Also would a Hotel in Carlisle North be close to the show? Gotta get a room booked today. There are some available just trying to figure out where to get one. Thanks

I always stayed " in town ". Less driving, closer to the show. After each day I never felt like driving. Then I was at the grounds from 630 am to somewhere between 430 and 730 pm.
Many guys here like the drive or the price farther out. It's a matter of preference, over the years I've stayed at probably 8 or 9 places there. My favorite was the Motel Carlisle, that got bull dozed for a truck stop. Now, the Holiday Inn express was my favorite but pricey. Hoss's moved, so now I have to drive to dinner, that changed the dynamics.

More to consider than you think. Oh, then there's breakfast. I eat at the diner across from the fairgrounds every morning, wifey likes that. Otherwise, I'D have to find a place on the ride in.
Bringing kids, the motel of choice should have a pool, confirm its open.

I lucked out one year and booked Comfort Inn Suites Downtown Carlisle, literally 10 minutes from the fair grounds. A member here was giving up their room and I took the chance and got in. Everything we like is right there, restaurant and the whisky bar, lol. I book the same hotel for the following year as I leave. It’s the only way if you find a place you like that close. I also avoid the traffic jam at entry 1, I think we go to entry 3 and get right in. I’m not sure if you can get in that way if you have a car for the show field. Once you go and experience it, you pretty much plan the rest of your life around the Nationals.....

I think gate 3 lets in vendors but not typically show cars.
3 is where I go in every day.

I purchased a trailer parking spot. Is that on the grounds or off the grounds?
Anyone ever here of trailers getting stolen? Should I take the tires off or something?
I know there is trailer parking next to the fire department outside gate 3 next to the camping grounds. SAFE???

Joining a caravan to Carlisle sounds soooo cool. I'd be in if the border was open. Enjoy!

Exactly.

I like to be a little bit away. Mechanicsburg is about 20 minutes away and if you take the back route where you come in by the Army barracks, it's a nice drive. The advantages are you have a bit more selection of restaurants and I think they are less crowded. The drive in let's you stop for gas or ice and there's plenty of places for breakfast, although we usually grab something on the grounds.

But it is personal choice.

I'm honestly surprised that there is as of now only one 1971 car featured in the display building, I mean they will find more I know that but I think it is a bit strange since there is only 2 months left until the show and they normally have all the cars picked out by now. Say @ayilar you wanna put Medina in there so there can be two cars?

Thank you for the thought but...

Medina has been brought back to original under my ownership -- except for the paint. The main issue IMO is the stripe, the presence of which will give conniptions to most Mopar fans as it is not correct for a C-body.

After mulling the issue over for two years, I have decided to not repaint the car until she needs a new paint job. Realistically, such a development may be years into the future (unless I win the lottery).

--> So, unless I get convinced otherwise, I won't propose Medina for inclusion in the display building. Indeed, Medina may skip Carlisle altogether and I will likely bring Buttercup instead this year.

I used to stay in Camp Hill at some independent motel. There was a handy bar/restaurant in the parking lot. Watched the US women's soccer team win their (99?) championship in that bar. I do remember the girlfriend elbowing me when the chick whipped off her jersey after scoring the winning goal! I must have been impressed! Couple years later the bar burned down then the motel closed. Now I stay out of town as I usually attend show just one day. Shippensberg or more often down the pike towards Bedford or Somerset in the direction of home.

15 following the river is probably flatter. You are still crossing the same hills on 80 as on the routes I mentioned, all but 26& 144 are interstate graded. Once you hit 322 off 144 it is all divided limited access highway till you would turn back on 15 down by the river. If you need to stay flat after the 22/15 split follow 22 across the river and down to 81. They are all pretty good roads now, 322 did have some cattle chute cow paths for a long time after you went over the hill, now it is okay.
If you guys want a nice drive in the country without the turnpike construction. Take route 303 east out of Streetsboro Oh. (you will have to go east on 14 for a mile or so). Follow to end, make a right on route 82, and follow to route 11 for a couple of miles and it will drop you on 80 east of Youngstown Ohio. Literally parallels the pike and is much more scenic, not as boring is 55-65 mph except for couple of towns.

The trailer lot is down the street a bit by the firehouse as you recall. Just buy a one of the may trailer hitch locks that cover the ball opening or a lock that replaces the pin.

Oh yeah. I have a locking pin and a locking ball tongue. But if I were a thief I could be through those in about 3 minutes. That's why I asked about removing tires.
I had a trailer full of tolls, about 20K worth stolen back when Obama led the great depression and people were stealing everything that wasn't under your bed. So that makes me a little paranoid. And PA is full of unsavory folks. NO offense to anyone specific, just city democrats I guess. Don't wanna lose the **** I EARNED in life.
Glad ya think that a few locks will be enough though, gives me a little hope.

I've been camping down by the trailer parking and haven't seen anyone messing.

Why... you no good low down scallywag...:poke:
You can have Gov. Wolf if you drop him in the Mississippi on your way home.

Glad to hear that. Kinda hard to steal stuff with a bunch of folks camping close by.

I'll have the Cordoba in the Survivor Tent this year. Staying at the Country Inn and Suites about 10 minutes from the fairgrounds. Have a room from Thursday night to check out on Sunday morning. On that note, a buddy of mine is supposed to go......we shall see, lol! If he bails I will have a bed if someone wants to split the room. Posting here first, if interested on getting on the list in case he bails PM me. If he bails I will start at the top of the list for a taker. Cost would be $300.
