DK41L9D297137 was for sale on eBay till last week. Listing removed April 11, 2025 but info still available on eBay. Matching numbers etc. as per the listing. Have not seen this auction mentioned (apologies if this is a report), so creating a thread here for records.

From the ad:"
1969 Dodge Polara original California Highway Patrol car. The holy grail of 20th Century Police Cars and regarded as the fastest 4 door sedan with an "official top speed of 147 MPH". This particular car recently ran the standing quarter mile in 14.5 seconds with an as raced weight of 4710 lbs. (I weighed the Polara and it weighs 4510lbs without me in it). This test was done at the famous Famoso Dragstrip in Bakersfield CA. All street equipment in place including the air cleaner.

Restored about 10 years ago with many NOS parts but still looks great. Drive it anywhere if you like. Numbers matching 440 Magnum Engine and 727 transmission, A/C, manual steering, power front disc brakes, heavy duty factory Leece Neville alternator etc. Now has a limited slip differential but originally these had open differentials.

One of only a few left (15 I think) and this one has the matching numbers original engine and transmission (rebuilt during restoration) plus all the period correct Highway Patrol Equipment (deactivated of course).

Original CHP push bumper, electronic siren, mechanical growler siren (with factory punched noise escape hole in the radiator support), PA Speaker, junction block, spot Lights, deck lights, under dash CHP Motorola Radio Head, Federal Siren Control, Motorola Speaker, CHP switch panel, electric shotgun lock, map light, whip antenna, CHP first aid kit and trunk mounting bracket, etc. CHP spec white steering wheel. It took many years to find all of this correct equipment.

Original CHP brass key tag with unit number (found in the defroster vent during restoration). Many old documents going back to the early seventies. Had one owner from the CHP auction in '72 until about 1991, then a couple others and then my friend and I from about 2000 till now.

One of only a few units that CHP outfitted aftermarket aircraft style shoulder belts as a test in addition to the factory lap belts. These are still present but a little cumbersome to use as it's a 2 step process to buckle up. But if you're going after a violator you might as well be cinched in place. I normally just use the lap belt.

Condition: Very good with some wear and tear since it's been more than 10 years since it was restored. The paint has some slight cracking near the back window and on one of the rear doors but hardly noticeable except when you wash it. The left rear quarter panel has some slight damage and will need a tail light, bezel and bumper repair. (a spare tail light and bezel is included) Also will need some quarter panel repair and re-finish.

Overall the car is quite nice in person and you never see a car this big, this old, and this nice.

The original door panels are generally pretty nice although the drivers door one has the most wear. Headliner is nice as are the seats although the passenger front has some small stains on the bottom cushion. The seat material was NOS and the seat frames were powder coated black when restored. The vinyl flooring is very nice. The headrests are nice and function up or down.

Brand new Cooper Cobra black wall tires on original "H" wheels. Zero miles on them. No spare tire. The tires in the pics are the old ones that have now been replaced.

The A/C and heater are not working correctly although the fan blows. I think the master climate control switch is to blame but I haven't looked into it. The heater works if you put vacuum directly to the heater valve under the hood.

One of the dash lights is burned out on the right side of the certified speedometer.

Because these cars were fitted with vinyl flooring from the factory floorboard rust can be a problem. The floors in this car we're rusted out but have been professionally replaced with a rust free donor. The original braces for the floor have never been removed, just the rusted out sheet metal panels of the floor. Check out the under car pics for details, a very clean job and looks factory.

The trunk floor was replaced and while perfectly solid this was done by somebody else and not to the same standard as the passenger compartment floor. Wanted to bring this to your attention. Also, the rear window seeps water and will need to be re-sealed at the bottom.

Comes with a copy of the Dodge Factory created special book detailing the special options for the State of CA. Because the State bought a little more than 1500 units custom built to their specs Dodge gave them a book detailing the differences versus a regular Dodge Polara Pursuit for other states.

Comes with a trunk load of original and extra parts including the Motorola trunk radio unit.

Any rumors on the final price? Would be interesting to see who and how much. Sounds like the car needs a far amount of work, tack that on top and it's a pretty good base line for the value of the car.

Is the engine red? What is the significance of that?

Wow! Cop cars don't usually tickle my fancy but this one is a really cool example.
I like how the key ring was found in the defrost vent.
Lots and lots of original police items on the car make it even better.

I too am wondering about the red engine.

@MrMoparCHP ...Alan , this was yours i guess ?
No that belongs to my friend Ron Hurwitz and has been donated to the CHP museum
Mine has a few minor differences, cage and body side trim is different (mid year change)

There is another video where they took the car to a dragstrip.
It got loose did a 360 and tagged the wall.
Hence they did disclosed in the ad the needed repairs to the 1/4 panel and tail light

I do know more than I care to share, there may be aspects of these transactions that the seller/buyer may not want shared.

The seller is a friend of mine.

Glad it found a good new home and nobody bought it to pull the drivetrain an send the rest to the crusher ;-)

Was a bit surprised when I saw it on eBay: knew the car from the lovely and very informative YouTube videos and thought the owner really had a relation to that car thus would never sell.

Didn’t knew the crash-video yet: glad to see no one got hurt and the damage to the car was quite limited. Actually quite well done from her, managing to spin that huge car nearly perfectly.

The eBay asking price of 49k was quite a big number to me, but on the other hand, these cars don’t grow on trees and it takes a lot of $$$ to restore one to that condition…so who am I to judge, if seller and buyer are happy.

Wishing loads of fun with the car to the new owner!!! BTW: a FCBO-member???

Happy Easter everybody!

About the video... oh boy the stories I can tell (rolled my first 1968 PK21).
The braking & spin, looks as if something is not quite right with the braking system, shock absorbers or the shitty Cooper tires. I could never get my tires to break away from a standing start in the 1968 PK21 440-6bbl with 3:23's, even when I put a 3:91 chuck in there, now if I brake standed the car I could light them up but by then I had bought brand new top of the line radial tires and outgrew my teenage smoke show habit.
Never got a chirp out of a low to 2nd shift but then it was all stock 727 PD trans in 1970 so most likely no 'shift kit' was involved.
As far as the brakes were on the 1968 PK21 (Budd discs) once I got them sorted (1 broken caliper piston out of 4 on the right side) the stock (what'ever replacements) low grade pads would fade out after 2 or 3 full force stops from 100mph but everything was in a straight line even when all 4 wheels would/could lock at 60mph.
Then I found some full Raybestos racing metallic linings pouring over the parts catalog at a local auto parts shop when my friend let me behind the counter to do it myself so to say. Order me some of those I told him... Now I had good braking power with being able to do 6+ 100mph stops without brake fade... then the rotors started cracking $$$$, plus there was the noise at low speed, not so much of a problem in colder weather when I had the windows up and radio on but during warmer weather without A/C and the windows down people yelling at stoplights to me that I need brakes got a bit tedious.

Now my 1977 PK41 with the LeanBurn 440 would spin the tires and step it out so to say and got me in trouble more than one time leading to it's demise. I don't know what it was other than the fairly decent Police spec radials on it or whether the Dana cone suregrip would lockup it up more than the clutch suregrip on the 68 PK21. One time coming out of a stoplighted rotary/traffic circle type intersection onto a state road, when the light changed and I punched it the *** end stepped out right in front of the view of a State Trooper waiting at the other light which immediately pulled me over to grill me about my driving habit. All I could say for a excuse was that maybe there is some oil of fluids down there at the stoplight and maybe he should call the highway department. He took a long time sitting in his car trying to dig up something on me as I had a fairly lengthy driving record by then and all the cops had back then were lowband radios & teletypes. He finally came back with all my paperwork and a stern verbal warning. Something about that 1977 PK41 that got the cops attention as I got pulled over a lot in it, car was like a cop magnet, not for speeding just other stupid **** like not signaling, or improper lane change stuff. Eventually on a cold drizzling night I was in full force pursuit mode on a country 2 lane through some esse's came into a right over a rise and the *** end stepped out throwing me into a spin into a ditch/bushes/stone wall tweaking the front part of the stub frame to the left and after powering out of the ditch (thanks suregrip) my steering wheel was no longer centered which just led me to say ah ****.

I think in many years past that the 1977 PK41 rear suspension was setup for the weight of all the troopers gear in the trunk and I had none of that other than the spare tire, crossbar wrench, box with oil, rags etc. and with the Koni shocks I had on all 4's that *** end was stiff as I remember pushing down on the LR taillight and I could only get like a inch or two movement. Had a rear swaybar too.

Now the video'r comments about the CHP turning over their cars in 85k miles I don't think is correct, maybe in 1969/70 but in 1977 when I worked in LA I saw many 1974 Dodge Monaco's still on the road in late 1977 and from word around the shop where I worked was that they would rebuild the 440's and many cars had a Million miles on them. Believe me I got pulled over a plenty (2x month) on my bike by the CHP, never a CHiP'r on a motorcycle, always in a Dodge.
The CHiP's show was just a myth in 1977.
The only close encounter with a Motor Officer I had while out there was splitting (5) freeway lanes going to work one morning and I came up upon a Motor Officer, dark blue uniform, white helmet, LAPD I thought better not pass him, then I saw he was riding one of the new Honda 750 Automatics... Ah parking ticket officer, luckily he exited from the freeway right quick and I could continue on.

I heard someone say "the brakes locked up". Now what would cause that? Did the '69 CHP Polaras have discs and drum setup or all drums?

OEM Disk, 11" drum in rear, power brakes.
I think she was use to modern cars and gave it to much brakes.
