i wrote back before i saw this. I was introduced to what C-bodies could really do on the open road in about 1980.

I had '77 Camaro..decided to mess with an "old guy" in a '68 New Yorker. I am full of myself (in my late teens, best gal with me), New Yorker is a bit beat up, no wheel covers, etc ..easy mark. So i windup the 350 and get a jump, see the New Yorker receding in the rear view mirror.

Then New Yorker burps out a cloud of black smoke, and passes me at 80-mph like I was sitting still ...roaring like jet, burping black and blue smoke, but GONE! I was like the Coyote when the Road Runner got serious...the New Yorker disappeared in a cloud of smoke over the next rise.

In about 10 minutes I caught up with him at a rest stop. He turned out to be a nice guy. Anyway, the New Yorker had 170K miles, rusted out, but the old 440 still had it. I was NO match for it..I might as well have been riding a tricycle. Ok, it was a '77 Camaro small block..not a race car.

But, I know "fast" when I see it..then and now. That '68 New Yorker was FAST by almost any standard....60 mph to well over 100 mph like it was nothing, in mere seconds. with the benefit of a greater understanding by a " live fire exercise", another Mopar R/B beilever was "born" that day.

I got ahold of him! And he still has it!! I need to find out a few more things and get things lined up, but I want that car!! Its awesome!!!

Thanks Samplingman...its that time of year to line up my winter project work. anybody who lives in the Great Lakes region knows what i mean...it could snow a foot ANY day now through April of next year.

Slant6man, yes you caught up with me brother. I check in here once a week to see whats shakin' so you just tried me between visits. Talk to you soon and we'll see what happens.

The Newport is getting a 3.23 or 3.55 Suregrip. I have a been wrestling with keeping the built 360 in it since it was born with one, or using a few leftover components from my totaled 71 New Yorker (may she R.I.P) and putting a stroked 440 in it that we built earlier this year but didnt use yet.

My '72 Monaco coupe is coming up for sale in a couple weeks i think. 440 T code car, still original (seats reupholstered, refinished since it came from Nevada tho). I post it here before offering it up to the world. its pretty nice car...somebody might like it :icon_winkle:

charcoal exterior, black vinyl roof, black vinyl interior, original road wheels, AC, power windows, etc.. not a trailer queen by any means, but a fun old cruiser.

whiteletter (versus whitewall) tires tho...nobody pick on me about that ok? :icon_winkle:
