Need some advice, or different points of view...

Need to talk this out....I could ramble a bit....

Been thinking a lot lately of selling my 48 Desoto 2dr Sedan. I feel I have too much on my plate with House, family, wagon, and my DD cummins crewcab. The wagon pretty much gets neglected, and only the bare minimum in repairs and upgrades to keep it on the road. Most of my spare time I do have gets split between the desoto, and into the general maintenance, and upgrades of the crewcab....which I love more then any of my vehicles, past or present.

I only have a single car garage, and enough room for one additional car on the driveway. Currently the truck is parked on the road. I had been keeping one of the cars in storage that I rented from a local fellow. But he finally had to ask me to leave, it was not unexpected. So now the wagon gets parked in the driveway, and the desoto is in the garage.


I have discussed, and got the OK from the wife, to buy an Enclosed car trailer to store one of the vehicles in. But I don't know if I want to commit to that expense or not. Also I really don't know if my heart is in the Desoto or not. I like the car, but I don't know if I can see myself keeping it long term. I was passionate about it when I got it, but the long term time frame on getting this car back from the dead I think is wearing on me.

It's not like I need the money from the sale of the Desoto....but it sure could come in handy with building a fresh 440 for the wagon, and a few other things. Or I could buy the car trailer, load up the desoot and all related parts and lock the doors and forget about it for a few years....concentrating on the wagon and other more pressing responsibilities. I just don't know if I will fall back in love with the car after that time or not?

I would appreciate any thoughts, opinions, points of view, or similar decisions you've made.

:thinker: .......... Tough call, and one your gonna have to make yourself. Stuffing the Desoto in a trailer isn't going to solve anything it sounds like. It's not like their that rare or hard to find if you ever wanted another one.

It sounds to me it is the old economic vs passion / desire decisions ,,,, Put some questions & numbers down on paper and answer them all as truthful as you can. At least that way your not making a flash irrational decision. All the facts and truth will end up in black and white then and only then you can decide for sure.........

Dude, I had a '59 Desoto Firedome years ago with factory auto hi lo beams, factory auto mirror flip, factory swivel buckets, and factory record player. I started butching it but then I realized that car should be a real live show car. Someone got all the weird options in '58 and she was just outta my league. I gave her to my landlord for nothing and she's bonifide show car to this day. I was working in a restoration shop then but ya know, you gotta listen to what the car's saying ya know? That old lady is beautiful now like she was in '59 and I'll never regret giving her away. You gotta know your limitations sometimes
 
Was discussing things with the wife this evening and maybe it's due to the fact that over the years I've brought a half dozen cars back from the dead, and I just don't want to do it again. Been there, done that, and would prefer to have a car I could get in, drive and enjoy. Maybe this also comes along with age too...in my 40's now. ;)

I think I'm leaning more towards selling, and if in a few years I want another vehicle, then I can pick one up that is road worthy, and mostly complete. Then I can enjoy it, while making it my own.

I sold a 70 Challenger RT SE that need a full restoration last fall so that I could acquire something that needs less work to get road worthy. I had money in the bank and my wife's permission to do the Challenger, just could take all of that time away from the family. I'm looking at a 68 NYer now that needs a little bit of body work and some mechanical tuning up, but hopefully will be pretty easy. The interior is in real nice shape.

Is that a 68 in your signature line?

FWIW, I have been having serious, radical, thoughts about my entire fleet situation. Won't derail your thread though. Mine is a whole nuther thread....

Sell it.
 
Cash is King. If it was your only car and space was an issue then it would be a tough decision. I agree you should let it go.



Or . . . . you could store it at my place. :giggle:
 
That is a tough call I have been that situation my self over and over. I give my self a time limit on each vehicle that I buy example 1 I bought a 1960 jeep in boxes for $ 500,00 I gave myself two years to start on it I didn"t meet the deadline and I sold it for $500.00 the jeep is now driving around and the person that bought it is enjoying it. Now on the other side I bought 3 1962 chryslers again with a time limit of 3 years to build a nice one. Three years came and the cars went, long story short they turned into a 1998 dodge truck. The person who ended up with the 62"s called me one day and I bought them back, they are back on the clock " the tranny for the is being rebuilt as I type and I secured a rebuilt dual quad 413". I don't know if this helps or not but just remember we can't take it with us we just rent our stuff. P.S I am currently working on 5 different projects.
 
You could buy one of these and have less time to work on the Desoto.

Hey Brian, been awhile. All the goodies I bought years ago from your stash made it to my vert and look great. Thanks!!

After reading your comments, I suggest maybe take a hard look at where you spend your time. Granted most will be spent working to provide basics such as shelter, food and clothing for your family. What's left is time you must manage very carefully between home maintenance, family and your relaxation, ie hobbies.

Looking back, I spent far too much time with my business and the little time left over went to my R&R in the bush with my 4x4. I'm just now realizing what I missed not being a part of my three kids lives as they went from pre-teen to young adult.

Unfortunately there are no "do overs".

So if I were you, I'd keep the wagon as maintenance free as possible to maximize the free time left for your girls and for your personal R&R. Your personal R&R time will get split between the crewcab, the Desoto and family events such as camping, fishing, skiing, etc.

So I would lose the Desoto and even the crewcab if it interfered with my family time. You can always replace toys later in life, but you can never recover lost family time.

Hey Bill. Glad those parts are working out well in the 'vert.

And thank you for the advice...this is kind of the lines I have been thinking as well. My daughters are now 14 and 12.5 and I want to spend more time with them doing "stuff". One less project/distraction will free up an enormous amount of time.
 
And Thank you to everyone who has offered me their opinions, thoughts and comments...I really appreciate it.

I think the Desoto will be looking for a new home soon. Have to work out the whole title/registration since I brought the car from the USA to Canada, but once that is taken care of it will be time to look for a new caretaker.
 
And add a set of blue dot taillaights while you're at it as well. ;)
