The beautifull & famous Reid Whisnant Pro Stock Duster is being restored to its original look.

This is the only one the owner will share for now. Hopefully more will come as he progresses. I see a little wheelbase shenanigans. Can you spot it?

Some other neat info

This car was built by Sox & Martin. This is the ballast bar as they installed it. Still in the car. Note the radiator hose that leads to a Pinto fuel tank I was told.

Reid mounted the rear support loop this way which was not conventional for the time. Also note the bolted in drive shaft safety loop further forward

The rear is forward in the body and it looks like the front has been stretched a bit.

Having no racing background can someone explain"ballast" and it's purpose? It looks like added weight which seems counter productive.

Cars have to make minimum weight for the class they run it. They put ballast in or out for a few reasons. Sometimes it is to change class or sometimes the track scale is off a bit.

Correct. Also NHRA mandated a 125 pounds weight penalty to all Hemi cars in Pro Stock during this era. Cars are built lighter than rules allow so ballast can be add to the rear for weight transfer. This is how Grumpy Jenkins was able to win with a small block Vega and then Bob Gliden in a Cleveland Ford powered Pinto. They eventually added weight to Gliden too
