I think you nailed it. They look at that South Dakota dealer's cars - WHO, IF YOU TALK TO HIM WILL ADMIT TO YOU THEY'RE NOT REALLY FOR SALE. THEY'RE JUST A FLOOR DRAW - ​and use him as a baseline.

That dealer, Gesswein Motors, was hard and heavy trying to buy that red Imp with the smashed quarter panel.

When I talked to the owner of the red Imp, he explicitly named Gesswein Motors as having called him 3 times in the first two days the Imp was for sale trying to buy the car from him.

That's interesting. I talked with a guy I know who was selling his 78 Salon. Museum quality. Gershwein kept offering him 1/2 of what it was worth.
