I posted this on question on the suspension/wheels &tires section and am asking it on wagon section hoping to get more responses. I would like to change the look of my 68 Plymouth Sport Suburban wagon. I have chrome magnum 500 wheels on it now(see picture) have been thinking of switching to cop wheels with dog dish caps. would like to this see some wagons with this combo. please post it if you got em.

Well maybe not others, but I mocked this up... this what you're thinking? Or do you mean the 70s cop wheels (probably now that I reread it).

A Sport Suburban was the wagon the big spender bought. The guy who wanted to show the world he'd "Made It" in suburbia and could go for all the bells and whistles. Putting body colour, or even black stamped steel wheels (cop car or not) and dog dish hubcaps just sends conflicting messages. Body colour wheels are for bare bones/fleet vehicles. Your Sport Suburban is the big dog.

Oh and FWIW, as great as those Magnum 500s look on your car, I hope you don't want to load your car up to its load carrying limit and go any sort of long distance or high speed with those wheels. Plain old steel wagon wheels are a whole lot bigger /n beefier than sedan/hardtop/convertible wheels. For a reason. They're designed to handle all that weight and not puke out when you least expect it.

No problem! I'm always mocking up cars and driving my wife crazy with mockups, asking "Hey hun, what do you think about this color/wheel/mod"

Personally I think your station wagon doesn't carry the look for steelies and doggy dishes. It would look like a 1960's affluent suburbia station wagon that had it's original wheels stolen. Nice job though RCB. RCB since you do this often what do you envision for this grocery getter for wheels?? I am sure you must have some ideas.
What wheels and caps were on when original? I would go with that . This is a conservative car that doesn't with it's paint scheme and woodgrain imply anything aggressive or would deserve "poverty hubcaps" lol.

Better said than I did.

I don't think the magnums are out of place and are "classy" as far as it goes. The dog dish wheels certainly provide a period look to a bystander as they are free from our refined tastes but for what it's worth I like them. :D That's great looking wagon (especially compared to mine!). If it were me, I'd be tempted to try a set of eliminator 500's (the old GTs) in chrome, but I don't think that's the look he's going for. If it ends up I keep the 65 4dr hard top, I'm considering16 or 17" steelies with dog dish... but that's a light tan car and about as plain jane as you get other than being a fury III.

And he might have actually wanted the 70s police wheels that are more aggressive.

I like the Magnums too on the car.

was just looking for a different look. my wife likes the look of the red painted wheel with the Plymouth dog dish. me now seeing what it would look like not so sure because of the clash between the red and woodgrain. if car was all red then I definitely like the cop wheel/dog dish. another idea might be a upgrade to the new American Racing vn501 magnum 500 brushed aluminum /black wheel. RCB could you photo-shop those wheels onto my car.

RCB any chance you could mock up that wheel for me.

Well one thing is for certain that I forgot to mention ,you have a very, very nice station wagon!!. I am also looking forward to what you come up with. It is all just a matter of opinion. It will look great no matter what.

I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Are you thinking 17s?

Um, I am going to disagree. If you want the cop/steelies poverty cap look on your sport suburban, then go for it! It is YOUR wagon after all. As far as Sport Suburban's having all of the bells and whistles, my old 1970 Sport Suburban (which I just found and is currently owned by a great guy in Wisconsin) was/is a 2bl 318 non A/C, no radio, manual drum brakes, manual steering hidden headlight car with roof rack and full wheel covers. The wagon wheel is only 7" wide. Cop rims are available in 7" and 8" widths. Those magnum 500 wheel are just as strong and the limiting factor will probably be your tires.
I've posted a picture of my old Wagon with 7" steelies and poverty caps.
BTW I love your wagon!!

Actually I must say your wagon in the pic above furyusvip with the steel wheels ,dog dish caps, chrome rings and the white walls looks very nice. Thanks for posting that.

:welcome: Actually the base steel wheels on wagons are 6 1/2" with the 7" included with the tow package.
8" steel wheels were base equipment on Light trucks.

I have black cop car rims with the proper 68 Chrysler dog dish caps, with raised white letter tires on my wagon.....I think they look great. And I would say that the same combo on your plymouth wagon would look good and would change the whole look of the car.

I love the car. But ..... I have to disagree with the wheel/tire choice. Looks like they were slapped on so one could yard drive the car, or roll it around.
RWL tires don't work on a slab side, least of all a wagon. The wheels would be alright under the original full wheel covers.
Kind of looks like an elegant lady in a gown and wearing sneekers. JMHO

This is where we differ in opinion.....and nothing wrong with your tastes either. ;)

I am the exact opposite in the way I look at rims and tires on these old C-bodies, and most old cars back to the early 60's.....earlier then that and you need to start sporting Wide Whites IMO.

To me the full wheel covers and white line tires really do nothing for me, only in very rare cases will I think that combo looks good on a vehicle. In fact white line tires period do not work for me, but dog dish caps and full wheel covers can look OK with RWL tires.
