Has anyone tried to turn their C body into a sleeper? Or do Y'all prefer stock? I got a 68 Fury iii with a 440 from a motorhome with an Edelbrock top end kit and headers . 727 with column shift and 3.23 gears. Plenty of power to move all that steel. My problem now is that the intake is too high for any filter to fit. Now I'm thinking about a gasketed scoop. I just don't want to alter the originality but i think my hands are tied

I have a 451 stroker with the Performer RPM intake, which appears to be the same manifold you have also. The Edelbrock triangular air cleaner with the cast aluminum top just fit under my hood. The 451 is made from a 400 block which is low deck though. A 440 will be a bit over 1/2" taller than the 400 block so that may or may not work for you.

Bob, what you really need is a good "drop" air cleaner instead of the original. I run the same manifold and my air cleaner has 1/2 inch to the hood according to the Play Doo test. Look around and don't get frustrated because there are several solutions available. With 630 HP mine is certainly a sleeper but looks mostly original on the outside.

There are plenty of people who have put built motors in their Cs, and there are plenty of others who will say it is a waste in such a heavy car.

I say, "It's your car, do with it what you want!"

I've also sunk a ton of money into her (surprise surprise). I like the idea of an air grabber type setup. But that may not be economically feasible. So switch out the high rise intake? What's out there that has the best money to power ratio?

You don't say what your redline is so I'd say the first on here, with the 2nd one being second choice. Good Luck

The second intake is the Performer RPM, which is what is on the OP's engine in the picture now. He said he got the Edelbrock "top end kit" which came with this manifold and should be matched to work with it. This kit will be Edelbrock #2087 on their website.

Find an air cleaner that fits. IMHO opinion, with the raised section going right down the middle of the hood, it is almost impossible to get a scoop to look right. Especially if you want a sleeper, don't tip them off to what lurks beneath the hood with a scoop. Great looking car, love the color.

Well, my opinion is that it is not much of a "sleeper" and no doubt has a sound that quickly gives it away.

I like scoops on my hood and have added them, but they have to fit the look of the car & its body style. I like the Six-Pack scoop if you wanted to go big, or the low, wide, flat Hemi scoop that would most likely be a better choice to match the boxy lines of your car.

On the other hand, if you did not want to modify your hood, then they do sell air cleaners that have a dropped base to fit over the carb. This will lower the lid and may give you the clearance you need along with the right height air cleaner element. There are several to choose from. Summit has the Allstar Performance 14" dropped base that says will give you 1 3/4" more. Mancini has a 13" that drops 1". So figure what you need and see if you can come up with a combo of dropped base and short element as long as it clears other engine parts.

There is no reference on any of those pages that's says **** about what intake comes with the kit he has! What make you the expert on what intake he has?

The 14" "Corvette style open element" air cleaner (aftermarket version) has a drop base that should work. The factory OEM base that was originally used drops the air cleaner element 1" lower than the aftermarket one. It's contoured around the 3310 Holley that was on the Corvettes and Z/28s that came with that air cleaner. So it might be a little low for your valve covers.

The aftermarket versions have about a 1/2" vertical "riser" section before the "drop base" starts, so that could be a little added insurance if it's needed.

For a historical and detailed pictorial listing of Chrysler air cleaners, on the www.jholst.net front page, click "Resources" and that'll bring up a long list of links. Near the bottom of that list is one for "Air Cleaners", which is a link to a Nick's Garage page on such. Air cleaners and the filters that fit them, from the later 1950s to middle 1970s.

The Air Grabber is for the B-body people who need them. Only real benefit would be cooler air, not more volume of filtered air.

Be sure to use a SHORT air cleaner stud!

Sleepers are fine, but you can't have a rumbling exhaust if you really want a sleeper vehicle! Don't want to attract unwanted attention.

Don't worry about 6000rpm power, but 3500rpm torque. So a lesser intake might work best if it allows a stock air cleaner to work on the motor.

TIP -- Use the air cleaner base from the Road Runner open element air cleaner, with the normal C-body air cleaner top. Should be better flow as there's more room between the bottom of the upper air cleaner and the edge of the base than the orig Road Runner air cleaner had! Only those with sharp eyes will see the lack of the base mating with the top of the stock air cleaner! Same diameter filter element as the normal C-body filter, too.

A "hot rod" that sounds like a hot rod isn't a sleeper.

Did someone say something about a '68 Fury with a stroked 440 that is a sleeper????? (OK, the exhaust note kind of gives it away. Might be the TTI 2.5" exhaust).

The intake in the pic of the OP's engine looks an awful lot like the Performer intake for a RB shown on the Edlebrock website. But then I'm no expert, just observant.
