In my wife's 2011 Dodge Nitro, 42 RLE auto trans, the inside of the trans pan looked like this at 43000 miles. See paint bubbling at bottom.

I reinstalled the trans pan and didn't think much about it
At 85000 miles I needed to change the trans oil again, because it looked dark. The paint on the inside of the pan was all bubbled and peeled and I spent an hour to make the pan look like this

My question is: Why would Chrysler paint the inside of an auto trans oil pan?

They dip the pan in paint. Cheaper than spraying even when figuring in any issues that occur with paint falling off. Most likely any problems will occur post warranty anyway...

Must be some cheap paint. Do they heat dry after dipping?

You aren't the first complaint. I've read about that on a Jeep forum.Maybe some one didn't do his job before coating. You did the right thing going to bare metal. All the old parts/pans weren't painted and lasted for 50 + years.
