66 Sport Fury-From The Beginning

Took us a couple of hours but we got most of it broken down.

I'm trying to get a recommendation for the cam. We would like to juice it up just a bit but I still want to be able to jump in the car and drive 2-300 miles.

How many miles on the engine? Are you going to pull the oil pan and check the bearings?
Glaze break and re-ring?

The motor is completely disassembled. We'll take the heads, crank and block to the machinist this week and see what he says. Heads will be rebuilt for pump gas. Main bearings are past the babbit and into the copper so we'll be doing those also. As far as pistons, the cylinders have that build up above the rings (I"m sure there's a term for it from slow driving in the city) so pistons will be up to the machinist reco on honing vs boring vs pistons vs oversize rings.

OK nothing new to report but I do have more questions....
I know I'm bouncing all around here but there is a method to my madness! I'm one of those "ripples in the pond" kinda guys so I'm trying to think several moves ahead to hopefully head off big problems.

So here's where I am now.
The engine is apart and will hopefully make it to the machinist on Monday. I'd like to go with an after market aluminum intake. If so it needs to take a ride to Leanna first so in order to not hold up the engine build I need to ask these questions. So please tell me what wouldn't work with a stock 440, an old skool Edelbrock Streetmaster 440 and my Carter carb? And what do I do about what I think is the choke setup attached to my current stock intake? Try not to laugh guys....

That Sport Fury looks alot like one that was on Craigslist a few years back that was in West Virginia near the Ohio state line. Lack of good photos and a seller who didn't reveal much about the car over the phone kept me from making the trip from Berryville, VA out to look at it. I ended up buying a white 66 Sport Fury hardtop in Culpepper, Virginia instead. I still kind of keep a lookout for a suitable 66 Sport Fury convertible to add to the collection though.
If you're in Winchester, you're only about 15 minutes from me. Maybe I should have made that trip out to look at that convertible after all.

Jim,
Same car I'm pretty sure. The guy I bought it from bought it from a guy on craigslist near the Ohio WV line, parked it and never did anything with it. BTW, your HT looks pretty good!

Would love to see your Fury some time just so I can see what I missed by not making the trip out to the West Virginia/Ohio state line to see it. Let me know if you're ever heading this way so you can stop and see my Fury. Mine has been stuck in the garage for a few months. It wouldn't restart when I stopped for gas a few months ago and I had to have it towed home. Chasing electrical gremlins, but it has been side lined while work on other projects have taken priority.

I've got a bit to do before mine can hit the road. First off, the heater has been bypassed. Secondly, the gas coming from the tank looks like swamp water. tires are shot, and I have a long list of things to do before she goes anywhere. All of the mechanical first and then body work. No cancer in the floors or trunk at least. We'll get together.

Jim that is a beautiful HT. Hopefully you sort out the electrical soon.

Thanks. Love your convertible as well. Thats one of my favorite 66 colors and yours is the first convertible I've seen pictures of in that color.

Thanks. It is as close to original as we could get. Has a bit of sentimental feelings to me as my dad had a 66 Fury II in the same colour which I learnt how to drive on.

NICE, REAL NICE! Had a 65 HT that looked a lot like yours; loved it, 383 three speed which really had a lot of get and go but Vietnam got in the way and I received a letter that said "Uncle Sam Need You Boy" and had to sell it. I now have a 65 Convertible, had it for 30 years but parts are hard to come by and takes a lot of wrench time. Next time, if there is a next time, it is going to be a turn key, restored and an auction, so I can spend my time sitting and driving instead of laying on the floor or hanging over the hood. But again, NICE, REAL NICE!

OK I haven't accomplished a danged thing but work all week but I had to throw this pic up. I know-cart before the horse!
