first run of the 505

440 sources stroker kit with light weight crankshaft upgrade. 10.5/1 compression , all ARP studs and bolts. Trick Flow heads which flow benched over 300 CFM. Roller rockers 1:6, lunati Voodoo cam . Specs, 273/279 lift 618/620( with the help of the roller rockers) with a LSA of 110/106. TTI long tube headers along with Mopar M1 single plane manifold and a Holley 770. Plans to either upgrade the carb to a 1050 or possible efi setup not sure. Right now I'm having excess blow by through the breathers and will be checking compression later today. Hoping its not any of the rings but if it is, I'll be upping the camshaft for more lift in the range of .700 or so. Trans is a 727 upgraded to a 24 spline and shift kit followed by a Deroit 3:91 rear;)
How long have you been running it? I saw the first start video, aren't you still breaking in your rings?

Yeah, still breaking her in but havent like gotten on her yet. Just been cruise the hood and thats about it.

Just wondering as if you haven’t broken em in yet, that may be your blow-by issue. As I remember (and it’s been closer to 20 years than I’d prefer to admit) I had a whole break in regimen for my 440 after I built it. There was the cam break in but it was like a half a day increasing accelerations... never really beating on er but starting at light and maxing out at about half throttle runs up to 40.... damned if I can remember the count or quality!

After that, I ran a standard 1500 mi break in before really dialing it in. Never saw any blow-by after those first break in runs tho.

Giver a lil time I think. She’s still a baby. Albeit a very angry sounding one!

Well it appears that cylinder #3 is dead and maybe the head gasket is blown. So diving into it now. I noticed when I took temp reading the other day, it was reading cold. Need to check the gasket and go from there. Worse case, if its a ring and I have to pull it, I'll just put a bigger bump stick in her lol. I always say when life gives you lemons, put a bigger cam in ;)

Ugh, not firing at all would be no spark to that hole, or valves not opening or closing.
Why do you think the head gaskets bad?

Cam gets broke in right away. The rings take a bit longer, long de-accels are the key. Better to run it harder to get the rings seated than baby it.
Break In Secrets--How To Break In New Motorcycle and Car Engines For More Power

My rocker system, valve springs and lifter along with pushrods cpuld easily handle .700 plus lift.

I thought I had commented on this thread but really nice looking car and build!!
Your engine is similar to mine (520 ci, TF 240, 670ish net lift cm)
My springs are getting real close to bind at this level. I think TF gives them an upper range of 700 lift. Might want to double check before you get into buying a new cam.

Well upon doing the leak down test she was unable to maintain a cylinder pressure over 5. The cylinder itself looks as there has been zero combustion what so ever. If I would have had cylinder pressure then yes I would think spark but without any it has to be the rings/piston.

Well that sucks.
So you were pumping 100 PSI into it and losing %95?
Man that has gotta be something pretty drastic.
You should be able to hear it gushing into the crank case.

Would be a much better scenario if a valve was hanging open, but, TF heads are nice pieces, wouldn't think that would be the first most likely failure.

Sorry to hear you're having problems.
Keep after it, it will be worth it!!
Subscribed for resolution.

Will do;)

what's your full cam specs( roughly)... My lift is arpund .618/.620 with my roller rockers.

My cam is .657/ .661 lift with 1.6 rockers, minus .012 lash.
Full up on the lobe, there wasn't much room between the spring coils to poke a feeler gauge through.
Depending on the spring package, TFS gives anywhere from .650-.700 as the max lift.
With that being said, I know Dad Horvath put more in his TFs (See Rush thread), just something to be aware of before spending time and money to find out the cam has too much lift.

Thank you very much;) Yeah it might be a good stopping point and to not push the limits you know. The car is differently making good power and once back on the road with some fine tuning and a 1050 Holley;) I'll have a look at his post ;)

What a great write up! There is a lot of fabbing required for our C body's thats for sure! I would love a A/B body also, but I do get a lot of people always checking out my sled;)

So checked the head and she's straight as can be. I'll be pulling the motor and going for the piston this week. One thing ive been kicking around is running my deep 7 inch pan now that the car is sitting higher in the front, but then there's the tie rod clearance so we shall see;) Ive enclosed some photos of the cylinders. Lets play which one was sleeping lol

Are you sure the valves are not being held open, i.e. seats settled in and valves held open. 95%seems like a big loss for rings.

That cylinder looks ridgy.Maybe it's just the picture, but, is that from a broken ring end moving around? Looks like horizontal marks.
Sure sucks to have to pull something so shiny and new apart.

Hey Dan,
I was reading on another forum about someone bolting plexiglass over the cylinder to pressurize that hole, was that you?
