My lens making thread.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again.
It is amazing and nothing short of awesome that you have created these
Reach around and give yourself a pat on the back :D

Doing a little house cleaning of my failed molds, about 25 lbs worth. I have learned so much in just under 2 years.

The clips have been great in the experimental phase of the mold making, the small size equals low cost for the experiments and discovering the best products available for the clips.

The lens are more expensive to experiment with, but I think I finally have the right combination of product and little tweaks to my process.

A local artist who uses the same product for his artwork was helpful in finding one last issue I was occasionally having. To where I am, dare I say it, nearly 100% success in every lens I pour.

Here is one of the works of art he made out if the same product I use for the lenses.

I realised I never took a picture of the whole taillight bank, of lenses. It seemed appropriate this beautiful evening in Ohio.

This has been a very satisfying process, I have learned a lot and have been able to resolve every issue that popped up.

If you took that picture at twilight with the ocean and a lighthouse in the scene, it would be killer:lol:

Mike: Your tail light lenses are amazing. Hell. . . YOU are amazing! Way-ta-go!

All of this impresses the heck out of me, too! By the way, a couple weeks ago when I was visiting Lisa we stopped by a relatively new bbq joint in Hilliard, which isn't too far from you. It is the Legacy Smokehouse and it right on old Main Street. It is really good, with the brisket and the short ribs being exceptional. If you are ever over that way and feeling carnivorous I certainly recommend it!

Thanks my 1998 version of photo shop couldn't achieve my cut and paste. :)
So Mike, have you decided on a price for a set, or if you will sell parts separately? I think after all the work you put into this, $400.00 a set is a fair price.

Actually I am asking $500 for all 4 lenses. I have put alot of thought into it, and included input from several people.

I will sell them separately but suggest that you buy them in pairs. I matched the color to the NOS lens I have and nearly any lens is going to fade over 50 years. I honestly did not notice the difference when I only had the left side installed, but my car was garaged most of its life, and my original lenses haven't faded too much.

You can however, notice a difference when they are right next to each other.

I hope you sell a lot of them. I think your price is very fair and the work you have posted in this thread alone shows that they are very well made.
As everyone knows, my health has not been good since my accident, and I am really working on the idea of selling my 300. But if things improve, and I do keep the car, I will get in line for a set.

Major break through today. Since day 1, I have been trying to figure out how to remove imperfections from old and new lenses. I have finally figured out the right combination of sandpaper, buffing discs and compound.

This is huge and pardon me for not sharing my process. This is definitely a deal changer, because before I felt like I needed a nearly perfect lens to replicate. Now I can remove the imperfections before I even make the mold. I'm certain I can repair a broken lens too, in order to reproduce it.

Are you taking requests? I have some parking lamps I'd like made in clear.
