Any plans to make 61 Chrysler Newport wagon lenses. The look like a boo rang

Right now I am kind of taking advantage of the wonderful membership, sending me NOS of lenses to replicate.

I am not saying I won't do it in the future, but I still need an original lens to make a mold and the the better the original, the better my lens will be.

An update of the right side of the 66 300 taillight. I got @FURYGT lens and made a mold and a successful lens of his NOS inner lens.

Upon closer examination I have decided my own lens was in excellent condition and a better lens to make the outer lens from. My issue however is the top anchor point is broke off.

Here is my challenge, Bill's lens is perfect on top, so my goal is to make a mold of that area of his lens and then graft it to my lens.

Here is my first step in the process, I had to think out of the box on this one. The area I circled is the section I want to graft on to my lens. I will pour to the top of my clay wall.

Step one complete, now I need to close the edges while maintaining the proper gap of the lens. Then I can pour the urethane resin.

I better picture of what I am replicating.

Well I had to scrap my first mold. I discovered nothing sticks to the silicone mold so there was no way to contain the space to make the urethane piece.

This was rather discouraging so I stepped away for a bit. This is plan B and I know it will result in a successful squeeze mold. This is all in an attempt to replicate a small portion of the anchor point at the top of the lens. Hands down the ugliest mold box I ever made.

First pour

Finally got back to work on a patch for the right outer lens. I have one big chunk of mold material for such a small section, but I've had success this time. Now hopefully I can attach this on to my lens so I can replicate it.

I am motivated now, will try this later in the week, because I don't want Goldie to have any down time over the weekend.

I wonder if this type of plastic can be solvent welded like acrylic fish tanks?

That is an interesting thought. I think since I am dealing with 2 types of plastic, the original is polypropylene plastic, while the product I use is a urethane resin, I am going to put my trust in a JB Weld epoxy meant just for plastics.

It is also sandable which means I such be able to polish it also, to the get the best finish possible.

My biggest concern is making a clean cut on the original, I can make another replacement piece if I screw it up. The good thing is none of this is visible when installed, but a seamless invisible repair is still my goal.

I think I can say I am one step closer to making a mold of the right outer lens. It is a rainy weekend in Ohio so I removed the lens from Goldie to perform the repair.

I cut the repair patch to the general size, to match the damage and then matched the lens to the repair. I am using a J-B PlasticWeld for the epoxy bond. This stuff is sandable and I already tested this aspect and feel good about a nice clean repair in the end.

Finally I have a very good taillight to replicate. This has been a journey to say the least, but I can add lens repair to my list. I used bondo for the basic repair, but it took 20 coats of build up primer sanding between coats to achieve a mirror finish.

This all for an area which won't be visible once installed. :)

It is now set in a few pounds of clay and ready for a mold to be made.

Has anyone sent you 67 Fury lenses? Mine are in pretty bad shape. Missing pieces along the bottom edge, faded, oxidized and cracked.

No I haven't made any Fury lenses. Do they have chrome accent paint on them, there isn't anything available that mimics the factory mirror finish?

They have a rectangular chrome pot metal piece attached to them.

Thanks, glad to hear this. I ran into a lens which had chrome factory paint. I bought several paints but was never able to mimic the mirror, very chrome like finish, from the factory.

I don't know what Chrysler used but from my experience, in the paint industry, it probably isn't even available anymore.
