I thought I'd make my own thread about the CATL Drive Experience this past weekend. I heard about it when originally planned, but my fleet was a mess without a proper running car. Fast forward to a week or so before the date of CATL and I suddenly had a car that was running, with new tie rods and idler arm, and I had the weekend off, so, how about taking the car on a test drive, to Illinois? This time out, I only grabbed my tools, Jack, and Jack stands, and I left the belt and ballast resistor laying on the floor where they were. Fueled up the car and after getting it aligned, I was off.

A beautiful day for a drive.

The Old Mississippi.

Into cheeseland I go. (I thought they had a bigger sign.)

IMG_20190906_163728.jpg

I made it to Rockford, and to the Playground, @71Polara383's shop. I got to meet @ayilar and see Medina in the flesh, I missed them during the Volo event and their brief appearance.

IMG_20190906_204928.jpg

We cruised Rockford and got some Mexican food and beer. We then had a photoshoot.

Then it was back to Wyatt's for some wrenching to get things ready for the Drive the next morning.

IMG_20190907_020208.jpg

So nice having a bay to work on a car instead of a gravel driveway.

IMG_20190907_020311.jpg

IMG_20190907_020226.jpg

Got up the next morning after leaving the Playground at 2:00am. I was only 10 minutes late leaving the hotel, and got there to find the place empty. We were up late, and Wyatt showed up a few minutes later.

IMG_20190907_103424.jpg

We set out for the first stop of the day, a photoshoot at the Belvidere plant.

IMG_20190907_110324.jpg

Our next stop was the Big Foot Inn, just before the border of Wisconsin.

IMG_20190907_121156.jpg

We got off track somehow, but traveled on some sweet back roads while trying to get back on course. Having rows of corn ten feet off the freshly paved road made for a very cool experience, like driving on a never-ending driveway at 65mph.

IMG_20190907_121926.jpg

We managed to get to our next stop, Slades Corner, where @sixpkrt was patiently waiting for us. A quick photoshoot happened here as well, a reoccurring theme throughout the day.

IMG_20190907_133914.jpg

We made it into Milwaukee just fine.

IMG_20190907_142622.jpg

And we made our way to the old Pabst brewery.

Time to be a tourist.

IMG_20190907_151050.jpg

I pretty much had that smile on my face the whole day, it was great to be able to drive my car and not worry about it, something I'm not used to with my older cars.

We had lunch with the proper beer had by all.

IMG_20190907_153253.jpg

"Uh, why is Michel taking us here for a photoshoot?" This just happened to be across the street from us when @ayilar stopped to figure out where our photoshoot would be.

IMG_20190907_163052.jpg

A Fusie photo session.

After we saw the lake and captured the moment, we headed out to meet up with @70 Sport Suburban and his dad.

A little note, I had only read the first part of @ayilar's post and never paid attention to the stops, or what might be happening at them. Other than getting to the Playground, almost every mile I drove on Saturday, I was completely unaware of where I was, and where we were going. I was just happy to be there and had no problem just following whomever was leading us at that particular time. It made for a fun ride, but I felt kinda silly when I was waiting to turn, and didn't even see this.

IMG_20190907_183115.jpg

Holy crap! What's with all these cars? I didn't know we were coming to this, what a sweet deal. It was Georgie Porgie's last cruise in for the year, we all got a prized dash plaque too.

IMG_20190907_174023.jpg

Plenty of Mopars at the show, a 1972 Imperial showed up later and parked with us.

IMG_20190907_182039.jpg

Then it was off to @70 Sport Suburban's house to hang out and shoot the breeze.

I was able to get a replacement cup holder for my '98 Ram, Manny had a few spares and was kind enough to sell me one, thanks again!

Wyatt swapped a brake light switch, and after being there for a couple hours, we needed to hit the road. We stopped at a gas station before we split up, @71Polara383 and @ayilar heading to Rockford, and @sixpkrt and myself back to Crystal Lake, and Hoffman Estates, respectively. I stopped at sixpkrt's shop for a little more bench racing didn't get out of there until 1:00am.

Just a note about places of interest that you were near in Southern Wisconsin.....

The famed Great Lakes Dragaway "Da Grove" was right at the Union Grove exit. There's a highway sign (use to be IIRC) calling out the drag strip.

The American Motors plant is (was) at the Kenosha exit. Also use to be a huge American Motors plant (was a Nash plant in the 40's & 50's) near the lake in Milwaukee at Capitol and Locust. My Dad worked there in the 1950's.

I'll have a few other flashbacks.....

Looks like a blast, thanks for sharing!

Sunday started off a little damp, some rain here and there, but that stopped and it was a decent day, even if it was overcast. It was time for a Car-B-Que!

Tim, @sixpkrt, found a great spot for a cookout, he got a large pavilion with a nice big parking lot. We almost increased our Monaco total by one, with @BLIMP making the drive up from his house in his '72 Monaco Wagoner. There was plenty of food, and plenty of drink. Tim's brother John came over from the Windy City to join in the fun, and his daughters had some fun too.

What are you doing, John?

IMG_20190908_145247.jpg

Wyatt's hood is open, because he thought he was at Talladega Speedway when he was driving to the show, and he threw a belt at speed. A little fluid in the radiator, and he was back on the road. It also turned into a tune up seminar before we left.

IMG_20190908_151001.jpg

IMG_20190908_151804.jpg

Then @Xenon showed up in his '67 Imperial.

IMG_20190908_161242.jpg

IMG_20190908_161450.jpg

We were all well fed, and as fast as it approached, it was time to wind it down. @BLIMP had to head back home, and shortly after that, so did our host.

Tim, thank you for putting on a great time. I'd do it again without question.

Soon, there were three misfits left alone.

IMG_20190908_174108.jpg

As I said earlier, a tuning session broke out. Ok, Xenon and 71Polara383 worked on Wyatt's car, while I watched and took notes. I had to run back to my hotel and grab my Vikings hat I left behind. They were waiting for me at the gate.

IMG_20190908_194458.jpg

This was the only cow picture I took. I was planning on getting any cow reference pictured, but I was too busy enjoying the drive to see the Cow we drove right past on the way to Milwaukee. We went on a CATL(le) drive, I thought I should include some cows. The owner of the Imperial we met up with at Georgie Porgie's even called our cars cows, and he didn't even know I was joking about the cows driving all over the country. And we covered a lot of ground on Saturday, just like a cattle drive would. And my nickname in highschool was Brown Cow, so I was already a cow to begin with. I'd go on a stampede with the FCBO clan anytime.

We set of to Xenon's house for another round of tuning the CucaMonaco.

IMG_20190908_200325.jpg

Wyatt and I set off for Rockford.

IMG_20190908_214040.jpg

IMG_20190908_161231.jpg

About fifteen miles before the Playground, my Monaco started making some noise, an exhaust leak had presented itself. After some discussion with Wyatt, I decided to stay the night and address it in the morning. Sleeping in felt good! I headed over to the shop and we got a new gasket installed.

IMG_20190909_113746.jpg

IMG_20190909_141916.jpg

After letting it sit, we found out that wasn't the issue, I still had a leak. No biggie, she'll make it home. We closed up the shop and went to get some grub from a local eatery. Wyatt brought me here.

326d1a996f3a9ae932d84675b9532907.jpg

If you can't find something on their menu, you're not hungry, they have a lot of choices. I went with the Gyro cheese burger, it was delicious! Wyatt's found out his gas gauge is off, or sending unit, or both. We were back in the road on no time.

I got to see the internet famous wagon that made the Carlisle run in 12...

IMG_20190909_142800.jpg

Wyatt, you might want to fix that before you throw it in the ServProlara.

IMG_20190909_135917.jpg

Leaving the shop, and another awesome weekend I'm Illinois behind me. (This picture is actually from the passenger seat of the CucaMonaco on the way to eat.)

IMG_20190909_150052.jpg

Ironically, Wyatt had to help his brother in law get some gas, the Karma cycle continues! I was going to drive out, but it was going the other way, and I was heading into rain, with no wipers.

I don't see any cars on the horizon, so I'll have to wait until June for a return visit to the Windy City crew, but I'll be back.

As I said, rain was in my future, and it rained pretty good a couple times. I put Rain-X on when I left Rockford, again north of Madison, and then again just inside Minnesota. The windshield sucked it up like none I've seen before, and then I found out hail will take off the Rain-X. But it worked, and I still love the product. A clean surface is important.

IMG_20190909_212837.jpg

Then it was a nice drive with the window down, the clouds parted and I got to see the moon for the last two hours of my drive. I didn't turn on the radio until l about 40 minutes from home, I just listened to the car, and all its noises, good and bad.

IMG_20190909_235713.jpg

I had issues with the lighting in the front of my car over the weekend. When I got there, my front marker lights had burned out, and the right front signal. Replaced the right side bulb, and still didn't have marker lights, but had signals. Good enough for me. Then after the CATL Drive, I lost a headlight, again on the passenger side. Wyatt had spares, and I swapped out that, and the high beam that was previously burnt out. My stupid self didn't know how the bezels came off! I didn't look very hard and totally missed the screws that Wyatt pointed out. Der! Adjusted them so I could see (don't you love headlights that point at the ground in front of you?) and they work so much better now.

Car burned some oil, but didn't have any other issues than what I previously stated. It wasn't perfect by any means, but performed everything asked of it.

Wyatt and I even got key chains for our Monaco's!

IMG_20190910_013712.jpg

Short list of what I did to prepare the car:

New tires.
New tie rods.
New idler arm.
Swapped carbs, new and clean to old and dirty.
Installed alternator and correct pulleys.
New fuel filter.
Replaced leaky new lock ring for the sending unit, with an old, bent, dirty one that seals.
New Chinese radiator I had laying around. (Works perfectly)
New bulbs where needed.

And that's about it. I hopped in the car and away I went. Another faith building adventure to Illinois, not bad for a test drive, eh?

I put on a little over 1200 miles, even the seats were okay for that many miles. I will get the exhaust figured out and fixed, do some simple maintenance things that popped up after that many miles, and then I'll drive the wheels off this car. It's fun to drive, fairly comfortable, has a good sound to it, and I just like driving it.

It made it through a torrential downpour with no wipers, braved Urban traffic without even a hickup, and got back home, incident free.

@AJC, @DocMcNeedy, @Stern70, @MN72Fury, @tunaboat75, and any other Minnesota members, this was a fun time, getting to drive the cars and go experiencing some other areas of the region. I encourage you to go on a CATL Drive if you can. I drove on every kind of road, interstate, highway, county roads, and city streets, they were all fun.
I almost forgot, we met up with @Jammer at Georgie Porgie's, so we had another member that got to share in the fun. This was a great shakedown run to find out what I need to fix to be ready for the show in Sunday, only a little over an hour north of me.

The smile from this weekend has almost gone away.

Special thanks to @ayilar for organizing the CATL Drive, it was just what I needed to turn things around.

And a big thank you to @sixpkrt for the Car-B-Que, you always hold a top notch event for us.

I appreciate what both of you did for all who attended, thank you for putting in the time and effort.

Seriously, you members need to make this event next year, it was awesome, relaxing, and I can't wait to do it again. We took 50+ year old cars, and drove them in every environment and they all performed flawlessly, and made it back the way they left. And rain, it won't melt anything, so come on out next year, and make this an even bigger event!

And also a big shout out and thank you to @71Polara383 for always having the Playground open to hang out, or work on cars. And for telling me I should come down, it was all I needed after swapping that carb.

I'll tally up the total miles I drove, and get a mileage number. I put on over 1200 miles, and loved every one of them.

I forgot to mention, I named my car the Cicada, because it's green, squeaks like one, and as @sixpkrt said, it's shedding it's skin (vinyl roof peeling). It's only annoying if I'm next to a tall median, or you're in a car next to me!

Wow! I feel so sad and lonely. I am from cheeseland and I was born in Milwaukee. Can someone let me know when the next run is going to be? I am not sure it is appropriate to post my email. How do I get in on this? Just love the Monaco 500.

There was a thread about it @ayilar posted. He is planning one next year around the same time, early September. This worked out perfectly with my schedule and then a car show locally this coming week, perfect!

Yes indeed! Like this year, the idea is to drive C-bodies and enjoy the countryside as much as possible. As I did for the first "C-bodies At The Lake", my plan is to post in early July next year a thread detailing the itinerary and timing of our second CATL Drive.

@Greg M: (i) if for some reason you don't see that future thread, simply PM me in mid-summer 2020; (ii) don't forget about the most excellent "Annual Midwest C-body Car Show" (aka "Volo"), which @sixpkrt has been organizing every June for the past 3 years and which is a bigger event.

Looks like you had a great trip. Glad the car ran great with just a minor exhaust leak.
