What is an affordable way to ship a steel hood from Illinois to Redding California?

Ideas..? Anyone....?

Two ways would be to got to your local Fastenal or maybe Greyhound. Fastenal is very good though.

Yes, Fastenal, be prepared to use lots of cardboard and plastic wrap it to an oversized pallet. It's a one man operation and they have to use a forklift to load and unload, but it's the cheapest way to do it.

Greyhound "maximum size that will fit under the bus is 29"x47"x82".
Items exceeding the above weight and/or size will NOT be accepted by Greyhound Package Express for transport." :(

UPS wants wayyy over 600$......

Sorry but we will not be able to help with your shipping request to CA.
All of our Fastenal lanes to CA are full with our own product and we are not
taking on customer product shipments.
Thank you for thinking of Fastenal for your shipping needs and sorry we were not able to help you with this request.

Thanks,

Lots of transport guys will pick up stuff like this along their routes to make some extra coin.

Fastenal will also work but probably will be pretty costly because of the oversize. But its 100% do able.

It is probably way too big for greyhound.

I would think it would have to be packed in a wooden crate substantial enough to ensure it won't get damaged. It would be costly, but I think shipping via motor carrier would be the best and safest bet.

I've shipped engines all over for a third of commomn carrier using Fastenal.
Hassle free for shipper as I crate it and drop it off. The buyer makes all the shipping arangements and pays for the shipping when they pick it up.
Takes a littke longer as it floats through their store supply lines, but much cheaper.
They have a division that is dedicated just to private individuals shipping on their trucks.
I've used them over and over. No complaints.
Call and duscuss it with them and they'll tell you a quote and how they want it packed to protect you and them. You can ship an Engine open, on a pallet, but they won't take responsibility for damages unless it's crated.
Just have to call and do a little research, but I highly recommend them.

I assume you’re talking about these guys? Engine Shipping | Transmisson Shipping and more.
I just used them for two pallets of imperial parts from California to Detroit and was very pleased. Yes it will need to be palletized and protected. Call these guys and ask for Steve.

Another spot would be a local CAT or JD dealership. They ship truck frt all the time. Only thing to watch for is some places double the frt charges to cover costs. We ship pretty big stuff so a hood is small potatoes and a cool counter guy will give you a crate from the junk pile.
