Trunk Mat Truths. What’s correct?

The spare was in a different location in the convertibles, off to the right side (see picture).
Here is my original 69 Dodge Polara (car is a sedan but CHP had Dodge put the spare in the convertible location)

This is the other 69 Polara I had, also a sedan.

So we could apply P/N 2879587 to this mat which includes the '69 Dodge and Plymouth 2 and 4 doors with the "Plaid pattern"

Sorry I didn't go beyond '69, I have up to '73 parts books, but it seems like it got more complicated in '70 due to the trunk dress up option on Dodge and Chrysler and Plymouth had a choice of a rubber one and a standard one? in 1971.

[QUOTE="stubs300. I'm now using a old oriental rug left over from the folks house.

Well until I can find a suitable replacement, it's going to stay. Besides, if I never open my trunk, you'll never know, would you? You have a problem with that?

Sounds about as "correct" as needs be.[/QUOTE]

So, what would be correct for a 1966 Polara convertible?

The mat in the '66 CL42 and '67 CE23 are similar in shape and material, but the '67 is a light gray, with squared side contours around the edges, with a molded-in carpet-like texture. About 1/8" thick and being rubber, has gotten terribly brittle with age. Especially on the edges which have a non-flat surface under them. If I take it out, it'll be in many smaller pieces. Seems like the '66 is a charcoal color?

I was glad to see that the '70 DH43 had black carpet in it, rather than the rubber, from the factory.

Enjoy!

65 Polara 500, and I think I remember all my others (65's) having started out with this pattern.

I sent my vinyl one with the wrong pattern for ‘68 back to Vans (REM). In my return reason I put that it was the wrong pattern. I also included a page with a picture of the proper ‘68 pattern in hopes they would request a change. I am not holding my breath.

Here is an updated matrix. For the part numbers in dark green the pattern has been confirmed. In lighter green, it is likely the same, but unconfirmed. I do not have any pictures or examples for '66. Also the Chrysler 300's (C-H, C-P) do not list a trunk mat, but some have described as a black rubber mat with ribs (un-confirmed with pictures)
Dodge seems to be pretty well confirmed.
'65 has a herringbone plaid pattern, '67 & '68 have a small herring bone pattern and '69 has a plaid that incorporates stripes or straight lines.

Please keep the missing info coming.

Green shading means the pattern is confirmed.

Here's a pic of the largest pieces left in my 66 300. It's oversized and tucks under the cardboard side panels and up over the axle hump. Definitely "carpet like" texture but the edges are smooth where it tucks in.

Our '66 Newport is similar. After a while,it became rock hard and brittle, being rubberized with a faux carpet texture. Now, to move it is to destroy it, so it's where it is.

Possibly the '66 NY had carpet? Have to check www.hamtramck-historical.com for standard equipment listings, I guess.

My '67 Newport is a thinner vinyl mat, but still fragile at this time. Kind of similar to what's in the '72 Newport Royal.

Every '67 Fury that I have seen that has it's original trunk mat has a plaid pattern.

My early build 8/11/67 Sport Fury originally came from the factory with a cloth trunk mat with a foam backing. It had a Chrysler part number on the back. I have never seen another like it. Sadly, moisture caused the foam to stick to the trunk floor so there was no saving it when the trunk compartment was restored.

Frankly, if it fits my car’s trunk it’s a huge improvement over the original, cracked into 50 pieces, mat that was in it before. Not gonna lose one bit of sleep over color or pattern myself. Nobody, other than a few guys at Carlisle, would even notice or care.

Thanks, if anyone has an original picture of a ‘67 or ‘68 Fury trunk mat, I will update my Matrix if it is different from what I have shown.

I found that Collectors Auto Supply Contact Us Reach Out Customer Feedback now has the correct grey houndstooth pattern for ‘67&’68 Polara’s. I have one on order. They have the other patterns as well.
I may have a perfectly good rubber Grey Herringbone trunk mat for sale cheap (‘68 Polara/ Monaco) right fit but not quite correct. Yes I am that anal. Or I may double up for a quieter ride.

Personally, I think that if I ever do something in the trunk mat area, considering the observed issue of condensate collecting in the stiffening ribs of the trunk floor, I'll be leaning more toward black, OEM automotive carpet (as my '70 DH43 had in it). No worries about cracking with time. Looks better, to me, too. Might not be correct for a Newport, but that's fine by me, too.

Enjoy!
