Hi all. I will be doing some work on the garage this summer - requiring me to leave the 68 fury outside. Any recommendations on an exterior car cover?

On line they range from $20 - $700 and 3 layers to 1000 layers.

What is working for you? I welcome thoughts.
Ron

I got mine at California Carcovers.com for my Newport

I've only used California Car Covers. My oldies are kept covered indoors however I buy covers to withstand the elements. If I'm at a multi day event the cover goes with me.

I have a few Budge covers. They make universal fit covers (they're baggy/loose fitting) so they are cheaper than a true custom fit. I use their "Duro" and "Protector III" covers, but all of my vehicles are kept in a garage or carport, so they mainly just keep dirt and sun off. They do offer out door covers, but I have not used one.

They tend to send me promotional emails, so if you go with a Budge cover I might have an additional code for you to use.

I've always used California Car Covers too and I really like them.

When I ordered the last cover, they didn't have it in stock and it was drop shipped to me after it was made. The address it came from was CoverCraft. https://www.covercraft.com/us/en/vehicle-covers

Looking at their website, there's a list of their vendors and California Car Cover is listed! With the others I see there, I wonder if (again) we are all just buying the same cover only with a different name on the box.

I still like buying from California Car Covers though... Great customer service etc.

Do yourself a favor and buy a good cover that's fitted to the car. Yea, the other ones work but if you get any amount of wind, the loose "fits all" cover will beat up the paint, especially at the edges.

The Noah material is popular and offers very good protection from the elements. Cal Car Cover and Covercraft (see my above comments) both have this. The problem is the cover is very bulky to store when it's off the car. I use the "dust stop" Cal Car Covers and that is a thick material and it takes a huge storage bag.

This should give you some ideas. https://www.covercraft.com/us/en/covercrafter When you see "ding protection", that's a thicker, bulkier material.

Ain't that the truth, they are super baggy and fit really loose. We got them on the majority of our cars, they fit good but I would not recommend them as a couple are teared and they tore easily as well. And these are cars that are inside all the time

Hi Ron,

May I suggest a California Car Cover for the car, it fits great and hugs the body so it does not fly off. We got these on 2 or 3 of the cars and we like them.

You have not stated your requirements clearly enough for me to even do a search.
The only requirement that you have provided is that the the car will be outside.
Expected life after you don’t have a requirement for the car to be outside and what your plans are for the cover after this period have not been provided.
These additional requirements have a significant impact on selection.

Hi everyone. Some great info above for sure.

Yeah - i noted that there were loose fit and custom fit as well. I wondered about the advantages. i also didn't consider storage when not in use....Good points to each. Same as to the material selection.

I am in a funny part of new england - snow belt, t-nado belt, huricane, etc. In the winter ...snow belt too. Just missing locust. Its New England - just wait a minute and it will change.

But for my intended use....it will be outside summer/fall to protect it from wind/rain while the garage gets some work done in it and the house basement i uncover while i swap out the stub frame and front suspension in the driveway.

Based on what i am reading from those with experience in car covers....and the web links provided (Thanks @Big_John) it looks like I will be in the +$200 range. Sounds like a fitted cover is more of what i should be looking at if i don't want it blowing around. I also see that there is a "soft liner" - fleece on some which takes care of my concern for more scratches or rub marks (as observed on an impala not far from here). That is a good start to help my mind set of being realistic.

The car has always been garaged since its inception. i got the car from its original owners....and it was a tight fit in the single bay garage at the time. It will continue to sleep in the garage during the winter.

Thanks all!
:thankyou:

Just be aware of the fleece lined covers, in that they are dirt magnets.
I also think that you are about right on the pricing.
I have a California Car Cover for my Mustang and it’s nice. I also have basically a cloth cover for Shamu and I only use it to keep the car clean inside the shop.
Good luck and let us know what you choose!

Amen to that, I used a soft, padded cover on my freshly painted beast in a sand/gravel parking lot while deployed for 6 months and on return found the cover had sanded all horizontal surfaces down almost to the primer. Kind of an extreme example, but worth noting. Of course, the vertical surfaces still shine pretty darn good and the horizontals still have mostly color so I still haven't repainted it - but it's only been 30 years now.

I bought direct from covercraft, don't remember the name but did get the "ding protection" cover just in case. I have a small garage and wanted the extra protection.

I have used the "dust stop" which is a fleece lined cover for 3 cars now and have been really happy with them. They are an indoor cover though... Using them outside like that probably is a different story.

When I would store a car for any length of time (like over the winter) and take the cover off, there would be this very fine layer of dust that would filter through the cover. Since I went to the "dust stop", I don't have that issue.

I have had California and Wolf car covers...both were good high quality covers. And regardless of what their advertising says they are not water proof, maybe for a brief shower and it dries up right away, but any long term rain and moisture will bleed through the cover and onto the car.

This may be a dumb question but do these covers have a sleeve for the antenna? In the past I've bought cheap car covers from Wal-Mart or Big Lots and I just cut a slit in the cover for the antenna. How do these legitimate covers come though?

Every cover I’ve looked at had no holes for antennas pre cut. I either cut a slit or un-screwed the antenna. I only used a cover for long term storage in a garage and it stayed on until spring.

The good ones will have a grommet for the hole that you put your antenna through. You have to make the hole.
