NERD!!!

This was at Carlisle 2020 this past year Trev, figured I would post it for ya. I wonder if it is a clone as I did not see an A12 on the tag, there again I did not think of getting a picture of it. I will also post this in the Carlisle picture thread I made.......

If that's a clone, somebody went to a lot of trouble to make it pert-near perfect. Has anyone seen this car before?

As for the fender tag, there's something stamped at the same location as my tag, which is where it says "A12". It's odd that it's not painted white, and I suppose it could be a knock-off but I doubt it. Also, you see that smaller tag on the left side? It's my understanding that this was a QC tag on random cars (like this car and mine). It was maybe a foot long as the car started down the line, with maybe 12 scored tabs that would be snapped off by the inspector, and those tabs had various inspection letters/numbers stamped in them for the inspector to check. Anyone know this to be true?

And look....here's the same basic pic of my underhood! :D

That car wasn't a clone. The owner had it a long time. Talking with him you knew it was real and he wasn't clone people.

I again didnt look at much this year just no time until they make this a 7 day event.

I believe and if I see correctly where you circled there Trace on the Carlisle car says S61 for the steering. I agree with your understanding about the QC tag as well, that is what I know it as also. I know Trev is the expert, maybe he can chime in here.

Ah, I got a good "magnification vs pixels" image on my screen and I agree that it's S61. That's tilt/tele, right? I also see that the "born on" date is 125, just like every other Hurst car. But no A12, except maybe just under the left screw? I don't have any code at that location. Odd how these things are totally uniform, huh?

Thanks for confirming the QC tag legend, as far as either of us know.

Yes S61 is indeed tilt/tele. I don't think it says A12 under the left screw, but I do see what looks like an 8 or 9 under the right screw next to S61.

The Hurst gurus have pointed out in the past some say A12 some don't. AND wasn't it date/batch built related?

At the top center, you can see Y39, which was "special order". Perhaps that was the "A12" for some cars. Mine has both, fwiw.

As for the build date, as I understand it ALL Hursts have that date, but most were actually build in the March-May timeframe. Maybe Hurst wasn't quite ready in January (fiberglass!!), so Chrysler kept cranking out thousands of 300s in the meantime. Once they were ready at Hurst, the tags went on, the car was done in EW1, etc. That's my take from various articles and discussions about the birthing pains of the "ill-conceived" Hursts. :(

I'm curious if the Real Deal Shifter Car is a 125 car. I doubt it. I understand that was George's car, not part of the A12/Y39 batch.

No it is unfortunately not a 125 car, it is a 505 car according to the fender tag picture in the magazine article that Collector's Guide typed up. I do not see an A12 or Y39 on the tag either but there is as you may know the Q

I immediately ordered that back-issue that you posted (August 2019), thanks, and should be here any day now. Can't wait to read the article!

And that makes complete sense that it's a regular build (non A12/Y39) with that 505 date and not the Hurst 125 "batch" date (for my lack of a better term). Regardless of when my car was actually built, I had a 50th birthday party for it on that last Saturday in January 2020. Mr. Bill Warner (the Amelia guy) took pictures! :D

I love this nerd thread!

The car in question is a fairly early production Hurst. It’s real and legit, who would clone a 300-H anyway?

That’s generally correct, although Hurst production started in late November/December.

George’s Hurst Convertible, was not coded A12, and if you know how Chrysler build orders were processed, you’d know why. (Too much info to list here)

Happy Birthday!!

Do you have the factory invoice?

What’s the date on your wiper motor?

What does your door sticker say?

Why is this unfortunate?

No factory invoice. I have the broadcast sheet, and a "photostat" (pre Xerox!) of the original title, dated July 24, 1970, which is today, 50 years ago, in Clovis NM.
Wiper motor.....next time I get the car out of my storage unit, I'll have a look. Can you hint me as to where that date is? Two speed.
Door sticker didn't survive the restoration from 1998, although the outline from where it was did. Now it has a repro ECS sticker (by me).

Any idea why I'm a Y39 AND a "38 Special Order" down at the bottom? Again, this car was bought by a guy in Clovis NM, name of Virgle Harrison. Not a Detroit exec, etc.

I'm fully convinced that Carlisle car was totally legit...never questioned that at all. Again, I'd love to see and photo-document it, and talk to that owner.

As for a clone, three things.
One, I've never seen one, but we have seen a few "tribute" cars, which is fine IMHO. Some are pretty good, some are tacky.
Two, a clone would be really, really hard to do [and needlessly expensive to do] specifically because of the hood and trunk. Impossible? No. Improbable? Yes.
Three, there are plenty of run-down Hursts out there (well, maybe not plenty, but they're available) fairly cheap, so cloning would be silly.

So who would clone a 300-H? Nobody with any sense.
