some people over the years have managed to get #s from a variety of sources and if you are lucky someone might have the info that might not 1st turn up on a search or in a book or online.

I have a stack of production/option books right in front of me and could help if I just knew the specifics.

Thought most the numbers were lost in a fire. Not correct?
Some not all. There are still basic model and engine breakdowns for most cars. There are some voids. Especially mid 60's stuff.

Mine is a 1968 Fury 3 fastop, originally 383/2bbl/727. Looking for overall production numbers and the breakdown of how many Fury 3/sport/VIP/wagons etc. What engine combos of each, that kind of data. Thanks.

I got those same numbers from Oldride.com.

Yes, my book has no breakdown for the fastback. The numbers are combined with the hardtop models.

so thats a perfect example of how #s can vary from sources.
prob the most accurate #s are from the annual option and accessory sales reports.

Got those handy? All I can get from most sources for '66 Polaras/Monacos is 136,674 for all models, no breakdown whatsoever.

classiccardatabase.com does have a breakdown, somewhat.

30,600 Monacos of all models except 500, including wagons
7,300 Monaco 500
12,400 Polara 318
63,000 Polara, including 500
29,300 Polara wagons.

That adds up to 142,600, not the 136,674 allpar.com lists. Close enough.

So I can determine my Polara and Polara 500 are two of 63,000, while my Monaco 500 is one of 7,300. The Canadian Monaco 4 speed is allegedly one of thirty-eight, but that hasn't been verified. So if Canadian numbers were 1/10th of US cars, only 730 Monacos for '66, thirty-eight cars would be 5% of that number, so it would make sense. It would be fun to find out for sure, but it doesn't matter in the end to me.

Always fun to hunt down production numbers and available options, etc.

Thanks for the information. Just like having whatever is still available. Mine wasn't all original when I got it anyway.

From what I've observed, the only people who worried about "numbers" were the Corvette people, followed by other GM models as times progressed. Similar with some Ford vehicles.

It seemed that unless the car had a 426HEMI or 440 6bbl motor, "numbers" didn't matter, until people started to restore those cars and "numbers matching" became an issue for top valuation. Then came the "1 of ___" B/E-body cars with particular option combinations in the later '70s or so. C-body cars were generally out of that realm until about 20 years ro so ago.

As mentioned, "The Standard Catalog of Chrysler" was the first place I saw ANY production numbers for the vast number of C-body cars. But just models with little attention paid to options on such.

Once you get the numbers for the basic model, knowing the standard equipoment (from the information at www.hamtramch-historical.com Library), then you can start to decrease the numbers (from the total built) by the comparative rarity of the options installed on teh vehicle. Then looking at where the vehicle was initially sold/ordered for any pecularities related to the selling location (as in Sure Grip, rear seat heater, AM radio vs AM/FM radio, etc.). From there, color combinations/vinyl tops come into play to further reduce the total production numbers.

For example, my '67 Newport CE23 Fastop, as I recall, has something like 23K total production. Figure in how many were optioned with the 383 4bbl (over the 383 2bbl std V-8), the 300-style bucket seat/buddy seat interior, white vinyl top, other than the normal "Basic Group w/air conditioning options) and that initial production number can decrease a good bit, I suspect. Then consider its Turbine Bronze body color and things can decrease further. Knowing the installation rates of these things, per centage wise, can yield the production numbers themselves.

Enjoy!

That’s what I’m trying to say in the Wyoming Ave plant thread. The most trusted sources have this:

1973 Plymouth Fury total production:
280,330 (Ward’s Automotive Yearbook 1974)
280,630 (Encyclopedia of American Cars/Standard Catalog of Chrysler, cited from Collectible Automobile)

The difference of 300 may sound like a trifle to some, but to me any difference is something to worry about, as they can’t be BOTH right.

I tried to explain away the 300 car-difference by supposing they are Wyoming Ave-produced CDK kits for export, but as such export cars have VINs for Belvidere or Newark, I suppose the export cars are included in the totals for those plants.

The 300 cars remain unexplained. Either it's just a typo, or something is fishy.

its not fishy. they actually would stop counting cars at a set date......
yes, the official production record cutoff date sometimes was earlier than the actual end of production. (as funny as it sounds, the guys doing those reports would, in some years, drive a stake into the ground and say "OK, we're only counting cars made up to (such and such a date)".
any cars that trickled out after weren't included in the total.
thats why the option and accessory report gives a truer number. cdn, export & ckd kits would be included in that report.
the only problem is being able to see the o&a report for that year........

Reading through Ward’s Automotive Yearbook 1974 I get three different totals for 1973 Fury production:

1) 280,330 (136,405 Newark + 143,925 Belvidere, "US car production")
2) 255,495 (broken down by series and engine type, "US car production")
3) 250,055 (broken down in percentages by factory-installed equipment, "US 73 model cars")

For 3) one can think that "US 73 model cars" does not include Canada and Export, but 1) and 2) are both for "US car production". 2), the lower total of these two, does include police and taxi units, though. 3) is apparently not based on the option and accessory report you mention, because it is the lowest total of the three.

What should I make of Ward's as an authoritative source of information at this point?

no one other than chrysler would have had the o&a reports back then.
it was an internal record.
as i said, chrysler had an official production record and thats the #s they would have made available.
so i cant say anything about ward's being an authority or not; they can only use the #s they have or were given......
