Never owned anything older than a 1988 vehicle. This is my first classic car. I didn’t want the typical chevelle, camaro, mustang etc... wanted different. Spotted this car on Craigslist last weekend.

Original california car. Purchased in Stockton California new. So I was told. Bought it from the second owner in Stockton. Who had his eye on it for years while it sat parked for I’m told over a decade. He only had it for a couple months before he decided he had to many projects already. 2 other classics parked in his yard. He may have made a few bucks off me but I’m comfortable with what I paid.

This won’t be a quick build. It needs a lot of love. But I purchased it due to the car being 99% complete.

Welcome! Nice project!

Great car. It seems the 65 & 66 Fury’s are gaining attention for the exact reasons you stated. What engine do you have and how extensive of a rebuild will you be doing.

Great find! Welcome and good luck with it. Cal car, minimal rust, nice interior too, console, is that the tach or vacuum gage in it? Looks like a good cleaning is all it needs but sitting 10+ years probably not. Looks like the unsilenced air cleaner, 4BBL 383?

Thanks for the compliments. It is the 383 4 barrel setup.

And no tachometer in this one.

As far as how extensive of a rebuild I’m not 100% sure yet. I don’t even know where I want to start. Although the brakes do not work I will probably start by trying to get the engine going. Just to get and idea it’s over all condition.

I’d like to give the interior a good cleaning and see if I can get the door handles to function. Right now you can only open it from the inside. Thankfully the drivers wing window rotates open with the touch of the hand.

Tachs were on 4-spd cars . . . "Perf Gauges" were on automatics? Great find! Buyer and seller happy!

The '65-'66 Fury IIIs were always popular cars, just that the Impalas and Galaxies tended to overdhadow them. Now that the Impalas and Galaxies are gone, the Furys can get the attention they always deserved! Very well-built cars, too!

Enjoy,

Thanks again for the compliments. I’m completely knew to the world of classic Mopars. So excuse me if I ask dumb questions sometimes.

When I look up parts and only see listing for fury III and not sport fury. In most cases is that the same? Right now I can’t quite remember what part I was searching for when that became the case.

Here are a few engine bay pictures.

Found this little tag interesting in the glove box.

Back in the days of the 5/50 new car warranties, many had little pages in the owners manual in which to chronicle required maintenance work (usually oil changes and such). Chrysler put that little tag on the glove box door for easier reference.

I fully expected this car to have some surprises as I tear into it. Part of the risk when you buy a 55 year old vehicle you don’t know the true history of it.

So here is one surprise. It had spark plugs replaced in 1980 (year I was born) and the car almost had 109k on it. It only has 112k on it now. Safe to say it’s been sitting for longer than a decade.

And one of the rusted out spots in the trunk grew some after some cleaning. But again I expected these things to happen. Part of the fun.

post up a pix of your fender tag, appears 383/330hp engine with performance air cleaner. If you have the time on your restro, get your original parts rebuilt rather than auto zone. nothing like original. start from the front. Have the radiator inspected, water pump, rebuild alternator, new hoses, rebuild carb and new points/condenser. all new fluids in everything. of-course brakes. That should keep you busy.

Yeah I would love to keep this project pretty close to original as possible.

The Sport Fury is very much the same as the Fury III but for a few changes. The Sport Fury got Bucket seats and console in place of the bench seat and column shifter. The side mouldings and deck lid got the engine turned inserts instead of paint. Other than the wheels, Your car looks very much un molested. Nice find!
