The 1972 Chrysler Thread

I own this '72 440 T&C wagon CP45T2C31443. Very late July 19th of '72 build. Will be hitting the chopping block this spring as its too far gone to save.

Not much, found it on FB market last year in the next town over. Been sitting since the early '80s. Was supposed to buy it on a Thursday but was sold out from under me the day before. Months passed and then it reappeared in August 2hrs north on FB market. I bought it then. Was supposed to be used in the upstate demo derbys but Covid had shut all the county fairs down this year. Not wanting to store the car over winter & possibly another season the derby guys sold the car off.

The car has terminal rot in the roof & floors. & most sheetmetal. Driver side windows have been blown out for years. The 440 is seized with a hacked wire harness & the drivers side torsion bar is snapped in half.

But it has alot of good usable parts. A core steel crank 440, 727, a 489 3.23 geared rear with 11x2.5 drums, July built car so it has the '73 style disc brakes, HD suspension, AM/FM stereo radio & power windows. Even the rails are still decent to use in another car.

A few months ago, I started The 1973 Chrysler Thread, with the idea of its becoming an informal registry for those cars and a repository for Q&As and information about them. Almost 200 posts later, it is time to start a thread for their predecessors.

As a number of you know, I acquired a 1972 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham this past June. This thread is not about Buttercup, however. It is about all the 1972 Chryslers.

There are a number of '72 Chrysler owners on the board. I am 100% sure that I am missing many (please chime in!) with the following list:

(i) NYer/NYB: USA (e.g., @oliver, @Gluchie, @marty koirtyohann, @kingbowl93, @Shelbyz08, @Mr. Ball Cheese, @Rattle Trap, @Roberto and myself), Europe (e.g., @Hotrodharbor in the Netherlands, @Zeb204 in Poland).

(ii) Newport: USA (e.g., @MattfromMaine, @ricks_RR, @Jon O., @Crazy4Mopar, @weirdbeard, @Jacob Schreibert, @ytb29, @scorp, @Rachie Barbie), Canada (e.g., @Keith926), and in Europe (e.g., @schwarzsurfer in Germany, @21_forever in France, and @Filippoff in Belarus).

(iv) Past/future owners: @polara71, @71Polara383, @Alan Adcock have plenty of experience with the 1972's as well. @JBR MA used to own a 1972 NYB 2dr and remains a fan, @Mark Wayne is into '72 Newports and @amazinblue82 is known to like '72 police Newports.

To get the thread going, I'll start with:

1. Scans of a Road Test Magazine article on all new Chryslers Corp. cars, courtesy of the Imperial Club. The Chrysler line-up is described on pp. 2 and 3.

2. a number of YouTube videos:
(i) the film promoting, in the form of a slide deck, to dealers the new features of the 1972 Chrysler line (NYer, Newport and Imperial);
(ii) a short commercial film for the Chrysler Royal hardtop;
(iii) a narrated slide-deck for Chrysler-Plymouth-Imperial dealers, describing the cars offered in various market segments (here is another version of the same video);
(iv) another narrated slide deck describing engineering/production features in 1972.

Holiday cheers!

Welcome @Great White of Cali! Your beautiful EW1 Newport Royal sedan was previously owned by @YTB79 -- see here for a thread with links that may provide you some history about your car.

I have never seen a photo of your car's engine bay or of its fender tag, so it would be great if you would post them here as there was a question as to whether your car has a 400 or a 440. Thank you in advance :)

Wow! I'd love to know this history. Car looks like it's been around.

Very old internet add that I can still easily find - I wonder where this beauty ended up at - This one is just a beautiful color combo and the great bucket seats I love.
Anyone kn ow where this car ended up?

@JBR MA: CS23T2C126889 sold on eBay in April 2016. Hopefully the new owner will check in. It was listed at the time as a one-family car with 74,211 miles:

The owner "lived in Southern California most of his life and career. His retirement was coming soon, and wanted to buy a car that had it all and that it would last. He researched all the cars at the time to find the right car for him. His wife had passed on and thought he wanted a sports car, but he wanted a back seat too, to take his buddies out to dinner. He felt he no longer needed 4 doors. He spent days, and several trips to a few dealerships in and around town. He finally found his dream car! Yes, he found a car built tough and fast, he found the 1972 New Yorker Brougham and fell in love with it. He got every accessory on it that he could afford. He paid cash for it and drove it home. He was so proud. He loved the car and kept it cleaned and detailed all the time, kept up all the services during all those years. Soon the car passed to his son, ho is now in his seventies and has kept the car just as his dad has all these years. (T)he son no longer had space to keep it."

Note the intact rim blow steering wheel with tilt:

Yes, it had all the goodies and a great color combo and in the last ads it looked to be in perfect condition - Hopefully the new owner knows of our little thread and checks in - Any idea what the eBay sale price was?

I believe $7,550. I did not save the tag or the engine pay pics, don't remember if it had AutoTemp or manual A/C, and don't remember if the cooling system worked.

@Turboomni posted, earlier today, a Dec. 2020 video of a 1972 NYer 4dr hardtop that was bought sight unseen. GY4 Honeydew / Green cloth & vinyl bench E9F6 / V1X white vinyl top. I wonder whether the following still picture shows what the original vinyl floor mat protector looked like? It does not look like a NYer crest, but does anyone know?

These are old photos from a sale site that had a few 72's but I saved this one because of black of course. Not sure where it went but @ayilar may know or have some history on it.

Thanks a lot!

I’m afraid that CH23T2C200888 is new to me. Looks like she was a triple gold (GY9/V1Y/E3Y5) originally. Well equipped including H53 AutoTemp. N95 code for California emissions -- if the car stayed in CA, it might not have been rusty.

For folks who like triple-gold cars, there is another "plain NYer" 2dr for sale now -- GY8 paint with V5Y inserts and a black V7X pinstripe, E3Y5 interior, and V1Y top. CH3T2C229723 is being discussed here.

Edit: I just looked at the pictures from @Rustyrodknocker, and it seems that when the car was repainted it not only lost its gold vinyl top but also its rear skirts and some of its side trim. It then gained rear-wheel mouldings similar to those of a Newport Custom, as well as side mouldings that are clearly aftermarket (perhaps inspired by the 1971 Newport Royal moldings, who knows). As a "plain NYer", here is what it must have looked like (drawing courtesy of the Hamtramck Registry; I discussed the trim on a 2dr 1972 NYB here):
