65 New Yorker Clock Lightbulb question

Aloha everyone,

I have a 65 New Yorker that the clock light quit working. I went to pull the bulb and it disintegrated in my hand. In fact I still haven’t been able to remove the gold base out of the plug (any suggestions?)

This is the glass part of the bulb itself. It’s smoked looking glass. Anyone know what bulb this is so that I could order one?

Thanks for any assistance. I’ve had the car for almost 2 years but I’m definitely still a newbie at all of this.

It looks like smoked glass because of deposits from the filiment have darkened the glass. The bulb should be clear glass.

The base of the bulb should push into the bulb connector and twist to remove.

The base is stuck in the connector really good. I’ve been trying to extract it with needle nose. Are you saying I need to push in first then turn it? The needle nose are ripping the gold base into pieces almost. Was wondering if I should spray some PB Blaster or something?

I’m thinking one possible bulb replacement make might be Wagner BP57. I’m sure there are others (Phillips?)

Thank you so much for that link! Using that website, I looked up the 65 and found the bulb reference for every bulb in the car. Super useful info. Thank you so much! Turns out the clock light was a 57.

On another thread, I saw someone posted a picture of their 65 with all of their dash lights on. Didn’t even realize the AC/heat module had illumination until I saw that picture. So I’ll be replacing that bulb as well.
 
Were you able to extract the base from the socket?
After I read your message last night, I was already in bed. And I’ve had to be at work all day today, but I will try tonight or tomorrow and let you know. Thank you for the advice!
 
Small standard screwdriver. Push it straight down hard and turn. Works every time. Needle nose, can’t get even pressure to push and turn.
 
Mudeblue and Ross thank you both for your advice. Push and turn was the instant solution. Flat head worked in 3 seconds. Needle nose pliers the other night equaled 10 minutes of frustration.

I really appreciate you guys helping out an obvious novice like myself.

In my quest to get all of the lights working on the dash I removed the ashtray lights. Neither of them is operational and I looked up the link that 3175375 provided and those bulbs are size 53 (thanks again for that link).

So now, my dumb rookie novice question is:

Does anyone know how to access the bulb?

I’m sorry if this is a relatively elementary question. I think maybe I’m just afraid to pry on things and break them.

See the red arrow in this pic? Grab that with one hand. Now see the yellow arrow? Grab that with the fingers of your other hand and pull out.

Big John, I thank you so much. Honestly, I feel a little foolish to have not figured that out.

By trade I am a pharmacist, so if I can ever help any of you guys out with medication questions please reach out. The story of how I came to own the 65 New Yorker is actually via a pharmacy patient. He willed it to me when he passed away two years ago. He had been my patient for 15 years. And no kidding… His name was Chuck Berry.

I have so enjoyed trying to figure things out on this car. But I am not very mechanically inclined. As silly as it sounds things like changing out lightbulbs bring a smile to my face.

I am trying to bring Chuck’s old car back to its original glory. Step-by-step.

John… I read a thread of yours a week or two ago regarding power window motors, and how to restore them. It was super informative. I don’t know if you would have any interest in ever repairing anyone else’s or if you do any side work like this… please let me know. I feel certain that if I would take these things apart, they would never properly function again. Ha.
