I have to tow a 57 New Yorker that has had the push button cables cut.
Does this trans have a "park pawl" that has to be disengaged?

I located another push button assembly with cables.
Is it a large job to change out at the trans or just a ratchet like bolt on?

57 is an a466 i think iron trans with just one cable for shifting , and tall has a e brake drum and cable as well . i've never removed one , have one in a hotrod 57 d100 p/u with a 413 in front of it from a 60 imp .

That push button cable is sort of easy to get out the trans IF you know what you are doing. If you don't it can seem impossible.
Undo the cable holding bolt then remove the little threaded bung on the side of the alloy housing the cable goes into.
Inside is a spring clip that you can push in with a small flat bladed screwdriver and that will allow the cable to be removed.
Now if you are having a good day you will hit that clip the first time you put the driver in there BUT you can also be there hours latter still trying to get in just the right spot to push the clip. It can be rather trying so good luck.

Thanks, you make it sound easy.
I assume its a little more difficult to replace the spring clip during reassembly.

Pictured are two different style cables (one of which you most likely have). This is the trans end.

Very easy to put the cable in. The spring clip stays there as you can see from the fine picture anouther member has posted. In super easy, out can range from easy to pulling your hair out. Biggest problem really is that you have no room to work or see what your are doing in that confines space.
If the cable leaks oil ( and they all do ) it is not normaly the small o-ring on the cable but oil leaking out of the plastic cable cover through the metal outer cable. Simple case of old age and being perished.
