Jerry Service..... Manchester. He also had a Hemi Superbird and the one of none 68 Hemi Charger 500 prototype. Remind me Jer. I have a story about him, his Hemi Daytona and my 69 GTX. He passed away in the last couple of years.

I thought his name was part of mine too but? Yeah I knew he had the Super Bird and the 500 1 of none also. I seem to recall you and I talked once about the color on that 'Tona not being correct. I saw it with chipped Black in the quarters and showing the Hemi Orange. Didn't know he'd passed on tho'. Not that I could or would spend the kinda change any of those 3 would demand today, but wonder where they are now? Think I told you in that earlier conversation that I passed on that '69 Daytona when the owner that had it back in the early '80s, and lived less then a mile from me just off North Territorial rd. And I'd just emptied my Piggy Bank to acquire my 300 Hurst and my '66 A-100 5 window pickup. AAARRRGGGHHHH. The owner was asking $18,000 for it at that time and I think there was an early Mustang involved in the final negotiation and purchase. More time needed for swappin' lies 'n swattin' flies come Carlisle SIR PAL, Jer ... LOL

As Jerry told it, the car was originally orange. It had overstayed it's welcome at a dealership when a fellow offered to buy it if they would paint it black. They taped it up, sprayed it and out the door it went. It was still orange in the trunk and under the hood.

Yup. And That guy was an engineer at the Proving Grounds that lived down the road from me when I had my shot at it"KINDA"

The story of the 68 prototype hemi charger 500 is pretty interesting to.
It seems that there was a parking structure at the proving grounds where corporate cars were kept. An employee could "tag" a car there and purchase it after 30 days. Story goes that Jerry's sister was a secretary there. Somehow Jerry knew about the Charger and his sister tagged it, was able to buy it after the 30 days and that's how he got the car. It was nor supposed to be for public sale and Chrysler tried, several times to get it back but Jerry refused all offers.
Jerry removed everything from underneath the car. Suspension, exhaust, steering parts etc and had everything chrome plated, (remember, this was 1969). He showed the car around including the Detroit Autorama and then stored it in a trailer at his butcher shop in Manchester. I haven't seen the car since the 90's.

Here a pic of Jerry behind the wheel at MIS

Here is a magazine article on the car. Original owner... yeah, Chrysler corp. My info came from Jerry. In the early 90's a bunch of Mopar guys would get together and cruise the back roads of the Irish hills in Michigan. Could be up to 10 or 12 nice Mopars including my A12 runner or my 69 GTX and either Jerry's Hemi Daytona or this 68 Charger 500. We'd let em rip now and then.

1968 Charger 500 Prototype Pics And Article

I saw the 500 at a Mopar show at the Ford mansion on the lake in the mid ‘80s. Still have pics. What a beauty!:wideyed:

Don’t know exactly what year but I’m thinking ‘85 or ‘86.
It does look like it was body in white at one time.

Man, some of you guys have collected a tremendous amount of history. Thanks to all of you for sharing.

Matt, not sure if you were being serious, but "body in white" does not refer to a white car. It is in reference to a bare metal body shell. Normally used for R&D and/or factory race cars.

Design study cars were sometimes painted white to best accentuate style and design.

They would’ve shot something at these “body in white” cars in order to keep them clean and I always assumed they painted them white. I also heard or maybe even seen a picture of a white “body in white” car.
Ok, it looks like the car might have started out white and then it was painted red.

A rust inhibiting solution was sprayed on them, Just sort of a wash to prevent flashing.
Being a prototype there is no telling what that car had gone through in the past. It was likely an early build 68, pilot car, perhaps, that got passed around for different R & D purposes. A fender tag would tell the story.
