Can anyone recommend a capable ABS scanner for Chrysler vehicles built from the late 90s to the mid-2000s? I understand that at least some of the software required to interpret trouble codes from this and other modules is proprietary, but I imagine that there is at least one affordable scanner which can point me in the right direction. Two of my vans (a '99 & an '02, both 3500 series, one with 2 wheel ABS, the other with 4 wheel) have the ABS & brake warning lights on, and I have had no luck sorting either of the issues out. I have thrown a few parts at the problems to no avail, so it's time I got some specific information.

I'm willing to spend around $200 to get a tool that can actually read the ABS codes on these vehicles.

Any ideas?

I have heard that even O'Reilly's will do a code check for no charge, and maybe get your parts in 1 shot? Good Luck

Would it cost much to get a dealer to plug in their scanner?

At least you'd know the issue and can fix when funds allow.

I'd rather get a capable scanner, pay for it once, and use it continually. I have 3 of these vans, so taking it to the dealer every time I have an ABS issue that I can't solve will certainly exceed the cost of a good scan tool. I just need to know which one to get.

snap-on mt2500, once the standard of the independent auto repair shop industry, can only be updated to '06. now considered to be as obsolete as vacuum tube testers and can be gotten for pennies on the dollar. get one with the last update and the personality keys for your vehicles and you should be good.

I'll have to look and see what it's updated to. But, I may have an MT2500 that I'd be willing to part with.

You're probably $1000 short. $200 code readers aren't scan tools and won't read manufacturers specific codes but just OBD2 generic codes. You will probably need a professional quality scanner.

Considering the fact that the van actually has brakes that work well, if I have to spend $1K to figure out why the damned lights are on, I'll take the bulbs out of the cluster and forget about solving this problem altogether.

I'm looking into bricks at the moment.
