From my observation, the place the gearbox will need adjustment is on the input side, where the rag joint is. If you turn the steering wheel, you'll probably notice the input shaft moving in or out before the car's wheels make any effort to turn from straight. As to "Cardone", they might not...

My belief was that if a car had a Saginaw steering coupler, it would have the thick rubber rag joint. Also my belief that all power-steering setups will have the sliding metal-body coupler. But there is likely more to it than that (like shaft alignment) as @MrMoparCHP mentioned.

what Big John said, firm feel, steering coupler, and rag joint replacement. Nice thing about firm feel you can pick what steering tightness you want, you just have to wait a bit because they build to suit.

What year / make/model are we talking about here regarding that part. And why is it called a "rag" joint?
