Cool -- I love this kind of ambition! Are you going to do any heat forming of the ABS sheeting?

    Automatic temperature control

As an alternative to 3d printing, you could try making a mold of a non-broken piece (or a broken one that's glued back together) and then pouring a new one, or two, or as many as you want! This site has all sorts of materials for that sort of thing Mold Making & Casting Materials | Rubbers...

    Automatic temperature control

My grandfather owned a 71 Mercury Marquis with their version of auto temp. That beach seldom worked right either. Basically, you'd just slam the temp slider all the way down for AC and all the way up for heat. I can still remember the freezing cold days when he'd turn it on and it'd start...

    Custom instrument panel face?

The boot time for my Pi is less than 30 seconds. I don't have it set to auto-run anything yet, so there'd be a little time added on for that as well. The boot time for an Arduino is only a couple seconds. But if you want immediate action, you could just leave them powered up but in a...

    Custom instrument panel face?

As for using a mini Windows PC vs. the Pi -- I think it would come down to choice and cost. There are small PC's that come in basically the same form factor as the Raspberry Pi. I don't know if they come with some kind of free/stripped-down Windows OS or if you have to buy an actual Windows...

    Custom instrument panel face?

Arudino and Raspberry Pi are the hardware pieces. They come in many different models which vary according to base features, memory, and speed. Usually the Arudino is referred to as a "microcontroller". It has a fairly basic CPU, some flash memory for code and a small around of working RAM...

    Custom instrument panel face?

Now that I think of it, since the Pi has built-in wifi, you could create a hotspot with your phone and have the Pi connect to it to stream music. I don't know how, but chances are someone out there has done it.

I also think you have a much greater choice of displays with the Pi since it has HDMI output. I obtained a small HDMI display off ebay. 4.3" with 480x272 resolution. I already got it working with the Pi and it wasn't hard -- just had to go into the config file and manually enter the...

    Custom instrument panel face?

I haven't gotten that far yet (A/D converter) other than to know that I will need one. Whereas the Arduino had that built-in. If your brother already has decent experience with the Arudino, it could work out ok for him. With the proper knowledge and programming, I'm sure it could probably...

    Custom instrument panel face?

It's been way too cold here to do anything car-related out in my non-heated building. So I took the opportunity to work on my digital gauge display I've been thinking about. My original idea was to put a small LCD display where the clock goes on the 1968 Chryslers. My original plan was to...

    Custom instrument panel face?

I had thoughts about a totally digital dash. Could probably run it with a Raspberry Pi. However, the main obstacle I encountered, at least with the 68 Chrysler are the dimensions of the dash area itself. It's very wide but short. I did some searching for a monitor or even a raw LCD screen of...

    Custom instrument panel face?

I have an old "digital duplicator" in our copier graveyard that I'm going to try to fire up one of these days which is basically a modern version of the old time stencil duplicators. It creates the master at 600dpi and prints onto paper with a thick water based ink. I'm going to see if it...

    Custom instrument panel face?

Wow, yeah that's just about exactly what I was thinking about -- even converted the PRND21 to a tach! Schweet! I don't think they did any customization to the clear covering panel though. Just the white lettering on the black background

    Custom instrument panel face?

I've been toying with the idea of making a custom instrument panel face, but I want it to look like it came from the factory. The panel in my 68 Chryslers use a combination of marks painted onto the black metal back panel and letters that are etched/engraved into the clear front cover. The...

Satin or Gloss on interior panels?

Follow up on this.... I bought both the SEM Satin Gloss clear and Low Luster Clear and tried both out on a small spot. IMO the Satin Gloss had a more appropriate finish than the low luster. The low luster I'd actually call a matte finish, no shine at all.

That should be a good durability test!

Satin or Gloss on interior panels?

I looked at SEM and they have some clears in their Color Coat line Their tech support recommended the Low Luster Clear to match the look of factory vinyl, which he said is even lower gloss than the satin. Does that sound appropriate advice? I also asked what would happen if you used a vinyl...

Satin or Gloss on interior panels?

So do you think the satin clear coat will provide a good finish? Not too dull?

Satin or Gloss on interior panels?

I'm refinishing the door panels in the 68 convertable which has pearl white interior. I'm using SEM Sailcloth white as the base color and Herb's interior paint for the pearl effect which gives me good results. Since white interior is so hard to keep clean, I'd like to put a durable clear coat...
